Biography

The surname of Mary, wife of Thomas Wingfield, early immigrant to New Kent County, Virginia is not known.

The only children of Thomas Wingfield (aka Winfield and Winkfield) recorded at St. Peter's were Ruth, Mary and Elizabeth. The excellent article "The Real 'Thomas Wingfield of York River' Dilemma" by Abigail Anne Young must be read to gain a full understanding of the state of both paper trail and DNA genealogy with respect to this family.[1]

Owen is provably NOT a son of Thomas Wingfield; he was listed as son of Mary Wingfield in the parish register and if his father was alive and Owen was legitimate, his father would have been listed. Thomas was still alive at this point so the most likely explanation is that Owen was either the illegitimate son of Mary Wingfield, Thomas' daughter OR he was the son of a woman named Mary who married another Wingfield man who had died by 1719 when Owen was born.[2]

The baptism of several of Thomas' daughters appear in the parish register of St. Peter's in New Kent County:[3]

  1. Ruth 18 Oct 1691 (p. 42)
  2. Mary 25 Feb 1699/1700 (p. 43)
  3. Elizabeth 12 Jul 1702 (p. 54)

Other children are credited without sources and as discussed on Thomas' profile and in the Abigail Young article, are not likely to be his sons: -- Thomas Wingfield (1693 - 1785)
-- John Wingfield (1695 - 1759)
-- Robert Wingfield (1697 - 1769)
-- Francis Wingfield (1703-)

Mary's death is recorded at St. Peter's on 31 Jan 1714/15 (listed as Mary "Winkfield", wife of Thomas).[2] (p. 447)

The only known association with the "Stegall" name is a Robert Wingfield of New Kent County who appears to have had a 13-year old Moses Stegall (son of Samuel & Elizabeth of that parish) in his charge when the boy died. Whether Moses was an apprentice or in a foster situation is not yet known. A death record for Samuel or his wife was not found in the parish.

Something is wrong with data in this profile. Mary can't have died before her children were born. The only source given is Ancestry Family Trees, there seems no other evidence that Mary Wingfield-172 was mother of John- Wingfield-677. Repositories don't seem to be publicly available. (Can you help me understand repositories.)
