Biography

Ludovic (or Lutrick) Stief was born ca. 1760 in Roxborough, PA.[1] Later, he would use the English first name "Lewis."

Lewis was an entrepreneur, a mill owner at Hillsborough, and a farmer at Turtle Creek. He first married a woman with the last name of Jones (first name is unknown) in ca. 1785. Second, he married Elizabeth Porter ca. 1788.

He died 15 March, 1827 and is buried at Turtle Creek NB.[2] His grave marker uses the alternate spelling of the last name: Steves.

Research Note

The original birth record of Lewis Steeves has been lost and his name has many variant spellings. If you look at the cadastral map photo attached to this profile, you will see the spelling "Ludwick" Steef (at the top of the big letter G). This is the strongest evidence we have to suggest that his German birth name was Ludwig (clearly the cartographer was writing the names phonetically in English as he heard them since Stieff was spelled Steef). The other variants - Ludovic and Lutrick - are on other documents, but it is clear that he eventually changed his first name to Lewis. As noted above, his grave uses the variant spelling "Steves" rather than "Steeves."

For the Last Name at Birth (LNAB), it is probably more consistent to use the earlier name Ludovic Stief. Mills-4919 20:10, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
