Biography

Friederik Steeves was born on the 8th day of the 8th month of 1755, according to the parish register[1] of St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Germantown, Pennsylvania.

The baptism took place on November 9, 1755. The entry says: Friederich, sohn des Henrich Stief und Regina seine frau. G. Friederich Stief und seine frau Maria Elisabetha. [godparents]

Unwary transcribers have assumed that the 8th month would be August, but at the time, the year started in March, and the months aligned with the meanings of their Latin-origin names. October is indeed the 8th month.

There are variant spellings for Friederik's name. The family anglicized their names and Friederik's name would become Frederick Steeves.

Young Friederik's name also appears as Frederick Stief on the 'Settlers List' found in Nova Scotia Land Grant Records, Book 7 page 183[2].

Frederick married Rachel Sommer on 25 June, 1780. They had 5 children.

Frederick died 7 May, 1830 in Moncton or Salisbury(?), N.B.
