Biography

Born 5 Apr 1870 in Alexandria, Clark County, Missouri, USA.[1]

William Casper Steeples is born to Harrison Steeples and his wife Adaline Harriott Nichols.

24 Aug 1870 Little "Willie" is listed with his parents and his older sister Mary in the City of Alexandria, Vernon Township, Clark County, Missouri.[2]

The family doesn't stay in Alexandria for long, they soon settle on a farm a couple of miles north of Granger, Missouri.[3]

4 Jun 1880 William and his family now live on a farm in Johnson Township, Scottland County, Missouri.[4]

29 Nov 1890 William marries Cora Belle Dust in Clark County, Missouri.[5]

William and Cora live in Bible Grove, Scottland County, Missouri for a few years and become parents of three daughters there: Anna Goldie Steeples, born 19 Sep 1892, Mary Grace Steeples, born Dec 1894, and Violet May Steeples, born 3 Dec 1897.

Around 1900 they move from Missouri to Iowa, where their son Harry Steeples is born on 05 Apr 1900 in Des Moines, Van Buren, Iowa.[6] I can't be certain of the exact year of their relocation, since the Census records vary greatly: According to the 1900 census, Harry is the first of the children born in Iowa, while in the 1910 census May is listed as being born in Iowa already. The 1905 Iowa State Census lists William as living in Iowa for only three years.[7]

Jun 1900 William rents a farm in Des Moines Township, Van Buren County, Iowa.[8]

  • Steeples William (head of family, white, male, born April 1870, 30 years, married for 9 years, born in Missouri, father born in Pennsylvania, mother born in Illinois, his is a Farmer on a rented farm, can read, can write, can speak English)

  • Steeples Harry (son, white, male, born April 1900, 1 month, single, born in Iowa, parents born in Missouri)

William's son Harry probably dies as a young child. He is not listed in a later Census.

Over the next ten years William and Cora have four more children, all born in Vernon Township, Van Buren County, Iowa: Arthur William Steeples, born on 29 Jul 1901[9], the twins Otis L Steeples[10] and Opal Irene Steeples, born 21 Oct 1905, and the youngest Teddie Howard Steeples on 24 Aug 1909[11].

15 Apr 1910 William and Cora now rent a house on Second Street in Mount Sterling Town, Vernon Township, Van Buren, Iowa.[12] William is working as a laborer away from home. His two oldest daughters Anna and Grace are working as cooks for a private family.

William's daughter Anna marries Elvin Hackard in Van Buren, Iowa on 23 Jul 1913. [13]

His daughter Grace marries Fritz Merchant Lock about 1913.

William and his family move to Clark County, Missouri probably around 1914/1915.

William's wife Cora dies due to Measles on 29 Mar 1917 in Clark County, Missouri.[14]

William's daughter May marries Charles Milton Campbell about 1917/1918.

After Cora's death William married Jane ??? I don't know much about her, could not find a marriage certificate yet and by 1930 she is not with William anymore. I assume she died in the 1920ies. I did find a Mary Jane Steeples married to a William, who died 3 Sep 1926, but she was born in 1865 and died in St Louis[15], so I am not sure if this is a match. Any help on finding more information on her would be very welcome!

23 Jan 1920 William, his new wife Jane and his youngest son Teddie are listed renting a home on the farm of Frank Harr in Jefferson Township, Clark County, Missouri.[16] William's oldest daughter Anna is also living there with her family. William and Anna's husband both work as farm hands.

  • Steeples William (head of family, rents the home, male, white, 49 years, married, born in Missouri, both parents born in Pennsylvania, farm hand on a general farm, can read, write and speak English)
  • Steeples Jane (wife, female, white, 48 years, married, born in Missouri, both parents born in the US (first listed as unknown), can read, write and speak English)
  • Steeples Teddie (son, male, white, 10 years, single, born in Missouri(?), both parents born in Missouri, attends school, can read, write and speak English)
  • Hackard Elvin (head of family, male, white, 49 years, married, born in Iowa, father born in the US (first listed as unknown), mother born in Iowa, farm hand on a general farm, can read, write and speak English)
  • Hackard Anna (wife, female, white, 26 years, married, born in Missouri, both parents born in Missouri, can read, write and speak English)
  • Hackard Elisibh (daughter, female, white, 5 years, single, born in Missouri(?), father born in Iowa, mother born in Missouri)
  • Hackard Wayne (son, male, white, 9 month, single, born in Missouri, father born in Iowa, mother born in Missouri)

William's daughter Opal marries Floyd Brown in Lee County, Iowa on 16 Mar 1924.[17]

William's son Otis marries Juanita Mc Elhiney in Lee County, Iowa on 10 Oct 1926.[18]

William's son Arthur marries Ruby Imelda Toon, formerly Warren in Lee County, Iowa on 8 Apr 1926.[19]

William's wife Jane dies on 3 Sep 1926 ???

William's father Harrison dies in May 1929. William is mentioned as living in Farmington, Van Buren County, Iowa in his obituary.[20]

18 Aug 1930 William marries Nellie Alcott Smith in Lee County, Iowa, United States. [21]

I wasn't able to find William and his wife Nellie in 1930, but he was the informant listed on his son Teddie's death certificate, who died in Farmington on 18 Feb 1931.[22]

William's mother Adaline dies in 1936.

11 Apr 1940 William owns a house in Farmington Tow, Van Buren, Iowa.[23] I believe Beatrice and Tom could be Nellie's grandchildren.

  • Steeples Willie (head of family, owns a house with the value of 125$, male, white, 70 years, married, completed 8 years of school, born in Missouri, lives in the same town then 1935, but in a different house, not working anymore)
