Additional Notes

Louisiana: Sherwood was born in South Carolina in about 1805, based on census records. His family relocated from Abbeville, South Carolina to St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana between 1810 and 1815. His father and older brother were found on the 1813 tax list for Clarke County in what was then Mississippi territory and is now Alabama, and his father died in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana in 1815. Part of St. Tammany was careved out to create Washington Parish several years later.

Sherwood and his brother Charles (Jr.) were the two underage males in the 1820 Washington Parish household of Widow Statam (captured twice), and both first appeared as heads of household in 1830, each married with a daughter under the age of 5.

Mississippi connection: Sherwood C. Statham "of Hinds County, Mississippi" purchased 40 acres of land on 10 Feb 1849 ("U.S. General Land Office Records, 1796-1907," Ancestry) and at least two of his children (Pleasant B. and Augustus) reported they were born in MS so the family may have been moving back and forth between Louisiana and Mississippi between censuses.

Sherwood and Cynthia were last found on the 1850 Washington Parish census (indexed as Stabham) and in 1860 it appears that some of their minor children were living with others either in Washington Parish or in Mississippi - Hutchinson was living with Wm D. Holmes in Pike County, Mississippi (I believe this was his future brother-in-law); Augustus was living in Washington Parish with S.W. and Louisa Bickham; and John was living in Marion County, Mississippi with the family of Lucy B. Collins, e.g., Lucy Brumfield Collins, the daughter of Sherwood's sister-in-law Lucy Brumfield and her second husband Nathaniel Collins.

Children of Sherwood and Cintha Statham based on their 1850 household; more detail and rationale can be found in Book of Stathams[1], pp. 29-35; all born in Louisiana except as noted:

Frances Statham, born in about 1830.

Pleasant B. Statham (Statham-7), born in Mississippi in about 1832, died on 9 Feb 1902 in Denton, Caroline County, Maryland. He married Mary Ann Ransom in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 24 Sep 1865.

Mary Statham, born in about 1833.

Charles Hutchinson Statham, born in about 1838 and died in Walthall County, Mississippi on 4 Aug 1876 according to the application for his military marker. He married Ruth W. Holmes in about 1867; no marriage record has been found but Charles was living with her older brother William in the 1860 census (Pike County, Mississippi).

Augustus L. Statham, born on 22 Apr 1842 in Pike County, Mississippi, and died in Wilmer, Tangipahoa County, Louisiana on 24 Dec 1914. He married Georgia Ann Hughes at her mother's home in Tangipahoa County on 8 Oct 1869 (information comes from his and his widow's pension applications).

John R. Statham, born in about 1845, died before 1880, possibly in Rankin County, Mississippi where he married Julia M. (Ramsour) Statham (Ransour-1), the widow of Alexander R. Statham (whom I believe was his brother) on 8 Nov 1870.

Alexander R. Statham, born in about 1848, died before 1870, possibly in Hinds County, Mississippi where he married Julia M. (Ramsour) Spencer (Ransour-1), widow of Gilbert Spencer, on 10 Oct 1866. His name in his parents' 1850 household looked to be written "Alen" but I believe this was meant to be Alex and is thee Alexander R. named here. He was not found in the 1860 census, which would have been helpful for comparison.
