Biography

Barksdale Statham was born in York, South Carolina, USA in 1788. Barksdale married Lucy Brumfield and had four children. He died in 1819 in Washington Parish, Louisiana, USA. Barksdale died after only 4 years of marriage.

Lucy Brumfield b 2-8-1792 in S.C., was the second child of John Brumfield and Peggy Kelly.

Her eldest brother William and her bothers Willis and Davis were all in the 12th and 13th Consolidated Regiments of the LA Militia during the War of 1812 along with her future husband. Barksdale was a 1st Sergeant, William was a Sergeant, Willis was a Corporal and Davis was a Private.

When they got home Barksdale married Lucy in Sept 1815.

(William married Harriet (or Margaret ) Statham. Barksdale's sister Susannah married Ridley Brumfield . Ridley was also Lucy's brother. Patsy Statham married James Bickham, a probable relation of the Captain of their regiment.)

Lucy and Barksdale had 4 sons (1 born after Barksdale died):

  1. John B. Statham. b 7-16-1816
  2. Charles J. Statham. b 8-18-1817 d 10-28-1824
  3. Richmond Yancy Statham. b 1-17-1819 d 11-31-1892 m (1) Ann Maria Sparkman Statham. (2) Martha E. Sparkman
  4. Barksdale Yancy Statham. Jr b 4-28-1820

Notes

(added by Donna Newman 5/11/21)

I have not seen a record that provides a precise year of birth for Barksdale but he would have been at least 21 years of age by 1813 when the events noted below occurred. His place of birth is based on where his father was found in land and other records beginning in 1790. His family moved to Abbeville County, South Carolina before the 1800 census and was found there through 1810.

As Barksdale Stratham, he was on the 1813 tax list in Clarke County, Mississippi Territory, now Clarke County, Alabama; and in Feb 1813 he was the plaintiff there in Barkedell Statham vs. Andrew Davidson.

He was a 1st Sergeant with the 12 and 13 Consolidated Regiment, Louisiana Militia during the War of 1812, based on his service record index card. No pension or bounty land files were found for him.

He curated the estate of his father Charles in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana in 1815. On 29 Aug 1815 a marriage license was issued to Barksdale Statham and Lucy Brumfield on application of John Brumfield [1].

Barksdale died in St. Tammany Parish before 1820 (on 5 Nov 1819, according to family researcher Bo Statham). His widow and children were probably the younger female and four younger males in the Washington Parish, Louisiana household of John Brumfield (Washington Parish was carved out of St. Tammany in 1819).

Children of Barksdale Y. Statham and Lucy Brumfield: No records have been found that identify Barksdale's children but they are commonly reported as listed here and supported by census records from 1850 through 1880 for Richmond (Pike Co. MS), John B. (Hinds Co. MS) and Barksdale Y. (Smith Co. MS). These consistently show the birthplace as Louisiana (except for Barksdale in 1860, which says Mississippi) and in 1880 give the birthplace of both parents as South Carolina. More information on this line can be found in John Statham descendants, Book of Stathams (pp. 19-28) [2].

1 - John Brumfield Statham, born on 13 Aug1817 and died on 22 Oct 1884 according to his grave marker [3] but also reportedly born on 16 Jul 1816 (from Family Bible, William Kelly DAR record, which is also the source of the middle name). He married three times, all in HInds Co., Miss.: 1) Margaret A. Harvey on 6 Oct 1847 (indexed as John B. Hathorn); 2) Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas on 9 Jul 1854; and 3) Martha Ann Davis on 13 Jan 1870.

The claim on John's Findagrave.com page that he was first married to Mary Ann Stovall is incorrect, apparently based on the fact that his daughter, Mary Lucy Statham [4] shares a grave marker with Rebecca Stovall Harvey in the Stovall cemetery; however, guardianship records for Mary Lucy Statham show that her mother was Margaret Harvey, the daughter of Thomas C. Harvey and Rebecca Stovall. The marker was apparently placed in 1992 by identified Stovall descendants and has multiple names including Margaret Harvey, who died in 1853.

2 - Charles J. Statham, reportedly born on 18 Aug 1817 in St. Tammany Parish and died on 28 Oct 1824 (from Family Bible, William Kelly DAR record)

3 - Richmond Yancey Statham, born in about 1819, died on 30 Nov or 1 Dec 1892. He was married twice, first to Ann M. Sparkman (per the death record of her daughter Nancy) in about 1848, then to Martha E. in about 1870. Martha is generally believed to have been Ann's sister and they were reportedly the daughters of Reddick Sparkman.

4 - Barksdale Young Statham, born on 28 Apr 1820 (per Family Bible page in William Kelly's DAR record) and died after 1885, based on the birth year of his youngest known child. He married 1) Mary Ann "Polly" Pope in Marion Co., Miss. on 4 May 1841; and 2) Mary Blackwell by about 1875. Barksdale's middle name and Mary Blackwell's name come from their daughter Effie Matkin's death certificate; the informant was identified as her sister Mrs. Florence Simpson.

Barksdale and his first wife began living separately after the 1870 census but it is unknown whether they were ever officially divorced. Polly Ann (Pope) Statham died in Lauderdale Co., Miss. on 12 May 1916 and is buried in the Union Line Cemetery in Soso (Jones Co.) [5]. Her death certificate [6] names her father as an unknown Pope and her mother as Lillie Barnes.

Barksdale and Polly's son John A. Statham is buried in the same cemetery [7] but the information on his grave marker is incorrect. According to his death certificate [8] he was born in Smith Co., Miss. on 14 Apr 1851 to Barksdale Statham and Mary Ann Pope, and died in Laurel, Miss. (Jones Co.) on 19 Oct 1945. The informant was Hattie Anderson, the daughter of his older sister, Elmyra (Statham) Anderson.
