Biography

HUGH STATHAM 1638-1700
27th Generation from Richard I
6th Generation of Nigel III

Hugh Statham was born circa 1638 in England the son of William Statham of Duffield, Derbyshire, England 1623–1650 and his wife, who is unknown at this time. The year 1640 is also given as the year of birth in sources as well. Our Hugh Statham was the 27th Generation from Richard I, Sire de Saint Sauveur, of Cotentin, Normandy, vide ca 890-930 and through Nigel III of the 6th generation who came into ENGLAND with William the Conqueror in 1066. This information was found in the Compendium of American Genealogy, Volume V and Volume VI.

On the 4th of February 1663/64, Captain John Rogers transported twelve persons into this Country to serve as Indentured Servants for 600 acres of land in Northumberland County, Virginia. Our Hugh Statham was among those persons who were: Mary Hooper, Daniell Wilmore, Martin Browne, Thomas West, Emlin Banning, Isaac Amorite, John Ashe, Robert Spencer, Edward Gatinge, Sarah Williams, and William Crabb.

Our Hugh Statham arrived in Virginia as an Immigrant in 1667 and can be found on a list of 2,500 Immigrants to America by Virkus on the US & Canada Passenger and Immigration Lists Index for the 1500-1900s. In 1667 Hugh Statham resided in Northumberland County, Virginia where he was a tutor and guardian of John Percy or Pearcy and of John Grimstead.

Hugh Statham must have been a very caring man as he co-signed for Miles Goreham on a bond on the 23rd of January 1668. If Miles Goreham failed to pay his debt to William Rust, Miles would have to pay Hugh Statham three cows and calves for his part of the agreement. William Rust and John Oldham were the witnesses.

In Northumberland County, Virginia, Hugh Statham married Miss Jane LOVE. The date of their marriage is unknown at this time, but we do know that they were married in Northumberland County, Virginia where they settled.

Hugh and his wife, Jane Statham were the Parents of:

  • (1) Presilar Stedham Dau To Do (Ditto) Born Feb'y 20 1664
  • (2) Mary Stedham Daug'r To Hugh Born Sep'r 12 1664
  • (3) Edmond Edward Statham 1666–1702
  • (4) Eliz'a Stedham Daug'r To Do (Ditto) Born Sep'r 3 1666
  • (5) Rachel Stedham Dau To Do (Ditto) Born Ap'l 29 1671

Hugh Statham died in 1700 in Virginia, as reported in most documentation, however there are a couple sources that says he died in 1702. Bio and research entered by hand, not gedcom, by 9th Great Granddaughter, Carole Anne Brown-44556 Whittemore on the 30th of January 2018.

Miles Goreham bond to Hugh Statham
23 Jan 1668/9 Miles Goreham bond to Hugh Statham, of three cows and calves, to protect Statham from damages if Goreham fails to pay debt to William Rust. Witness: William Rust, John Oldham. (Northumberland County Deeds & Wills 1666-1670, p74.) Statham was the surety for Goreham’s debt. Miles Gorham apparently is livingon the opposite bank of the Yeocomico in Northumberland County, as the suitwould have had to be brought in his county of residence.

Biographical notes

Questions regarding the claims about Hugh Statham et al. and the reliability of some of the sources for them (see also "The Descent of the Family of Statham, The Compendium of American Genealogy and the Morris-Statham Family Bible," which has been uploaded):

1 - The entry in The Compendium of American Genealogy Vol. IV represents the ancestry of Mary Beaumont Statham as evidenced by the lineage presented, but no sources are provided and without them it is difficult to evaluate many of her claims.

2 - The entry on Hugh Statham in The Compendium of American Genealogy Vol V appears to have come from S.P.H. Statham's book, The Descent of the Family of Statham, but even he was unable to do more than conjecture that Hugh was of the Derbyshire line, placing him as the son of William Statham who was born in 1633 (chart on p. 90). But this isn't plausible unless Hugh was still a child when he first appeared in Northumberland County, Virginia records in 1663.

3 - Beverly Fleet, who compiled Records of Birth, 1661-1810 , stated in the Preface that she extracted the information from what was reported to be the Register of St. Stephen's Parish in Northumberland but that the record contained entries pre-dating that parish and the entries, spanning ninety years, were all written in the same hand.

None of these qualifiers make the contents of the above sources untrue but they must be factored in when weighing the validity of the claims, including how well they agree or conflict with other sources.

Evidence?

The relative scarcity of the Statham surname in colonial Virginia makes the claim that Hugh was the father of Edmund and the grandfather of Love plausible, but this is not proof, especially absent any tangible ties between them like being found in the same county.

Northumberland County: It is well-established that Hugh was one of the individuals for whom transportation costs into the colony were paid according to a petition for headright land on 4 Feb 1663/4. But applications for headright land were not always made immediately on the arrival of the transportee and this individual wasn't always a new immigrant to the colonies, so although this is the earliest record found for Hugh, it may not reflect the precise date of his immigration (Armstrong, Cavaliers and Pioneers).

A number of mentions were found of Hugh Statham and one of Jane Statham in the Northumberland County resources listed below (a compilation of abstracts, Hugh Statham in Northumberland County court records, has been uploaded). No mention was found in these resources of an Edmund or Edward Statham.

Wills of Hugh and Jane Statham: On 16 Oct 1700, on motion of Thomas Miller Executor, probate was granted to him of the last will and testament of Hugh Statham, which was proved by the oaths of Jonathan Palefry, Sarah Bashaw, Teige Allen & Teige Canady.

Jane's nuncupative will was proved on 17 Mar 1702/3.

Unfortunately, no further records for Hugh and Jane have survived, and this includes the actual wills and any records pertaining to the administration of their estates. Deeds, wills and estate settlements were all recorded in a series of volumes called "Record Books" and there is a gap in these volumes from 1672 to 1710 due to a fire in the county clerk's office (Forrester, 2012 correspondence). The Order Books from 1650 to the present have survived, fortunately, since this is the only record that the wills even existed.
