Biography

Mary Stanley, illegitimate daughter of Maria Stanley was born at Bentley in Yorkshire on the 29th of July 1863. ^[1] In December that year her mother married John Pinder of Haxey. ^[2] Mary was left with her grandparents, William Stanley and his wife, Mary Guest. ^[3]

She was in service by 1881 working for the Seeley farming family at Awley in Yorkshire. ^[4] By 1891 she had learned a trade, dressmaker, and was living with her mother and stepfather at Haxey in Lincolnshire and using the name Pinder. ^[5]

St Nicholas

Mary married Joseph Steadman at Haxey in 1891 ^[6] the same Joseph Steadman who had been in service with her in 1881.

Their son, Joseph, having joined up for the war was killed on the 7th of December 1917. ^[7]

Joseph died in 1937. ^[8]

When the second world war broke out in 1939, Mary was living with her daughter, Alice, and Alice's husband, buider, Joseph Bartle. ^[9]

Mary died in 1944, her death being registered at Scunthorpe. ^[10]
