Biography

This profile is part of the Spencer Name Study.

Elijah Spencer was born at Windham, Connecticut Colony, in mid-February of 1758, a son of John Spencer and Mary (Simons) Spencer; he married Hannah Farnham before December of 1787, the date of the birth of their son John.

Elijah died at Windham in March of 1838.

Research Notes

Elijah's pension record (see sources) shows that he married a Hannah Farnham. It at first seemed she might be this Hannah Farham of Windham: the name was right, and the place was right... but the age differential was quite unusual, as she (b. May 1746) would have been nearly twelve years his senior... and age 42 when son John was born in December of 1787 (calculated DOB). It has since been ascertained that she in fact married Eleazar Hibbard, and the couple moved to Nova Scotia.

Another possible candidate, given the wide variations in the spelling of surnames in the 17th and 18th centuries, is Hannah Forman, born close by Windham at Killingly in 1756,[1] and thus relatively close in age to Elijah. Further research is needed to determine whether this is in fact a viable match.

The pension record (which gives the exact matching dates, for Elijah, to those in this profile, so the identification is certain) also shows that he "was in Saratoga County [NY] in 1832". Another possibility is thus that he married a woman from that area.
