Clare was born in 10 Apr 1897 at Harrisville, Alcona, Michigan. [1] His parents were Lincoln Spencer and Mattie Nevin who lived in Harrisville Township. [2] In 1904 his mother separated from his father and moved her family to Eastern Washington. Unable to care for all her children and work; she enrolled Clare and his brother Allen in the Idaho State Industrial School at St. Anthony in Fremont County, Idaho. [3] After finishing his training he relocated to Gallatin County, Montana where his brother Earl was iiving and working for Clare's future father-in-law, Charles White. Clare went to work as a well driller for White and courted his daughter, Ruth. Clare and Ruth were married 9 Apr 1919 at Bozeman. [4] They continued to live at Bozeman after their marriage. [5] During the 1920's they relocated to Hayden Lake in Kootenai County, Idaho where he worked as a farm laborer. [6] By the time the 1940 census was taken, they had relocated to Curlew in Ferry County, Washington where Clare farmed on his own.[7] For the 1950 census, they are living at East Cheney in Spokane County, Washington and Clare is farming and operating a dairy farm. [8] They would eventually settle on a large acreage at Careywood in Bonner County, Idaho where they would remain until their deaths and where Clare would have a large dairy and then later raise sheep. He passed away in May 1984 at Careywood. [9] Clare and Ruth were the parents of three daughters: Bernice, Dorothy and Carol.
