Project Description and Scope

The Early New England Families (ENEF) Project is tracking and updating the Early New England Families Study Project profiles developed by Alicia Crane Williams at the New England Historic Genealogical Society.

It was created, in part, as a tool to assist the Purtian Great Migration (PGM) project. Because the PGM Project does not strickly follow the criteria of Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration Study Project, many of the ENEF Study Project profiles can fall outside the scope of the PGM Project. This tool helps sort out these profiles.

Also, because it is fun and educational to follow the work of Early New England Professional Genealogists.

An Introduction to The Early New England Families Study Project

Many of these profiles are generally the children of the Great Migration Study Project; as such, they are profiles that Robert Charles Anderson has not developed as he focused on the parent profile. Anderson also did not create separate profiles for the wives of GM emmigrants if they migrated with their husband. In these cases both the children and the wife were treated as part of the GM profile.

Because the ENEF project focuses primarily on Clarence Almon Torrey's New England Marriages prior to 1700, there are many profiles that do not fall withing the Great Migration project.

Some issues to consider when comparing ENEF to GM. [from ENEF Introduction].

  • 35,000 marriages recorded before 1700
  • Start with persons who emmigrated after 1640.
  • Sketches will be grouped by year of marriage rather than year of immigration.
  • Some who married in 1641 had emmigrated prior to marriage and are treated in GM.
  • Some who arrived in 1641 had married before emmigration and arrived married.
  • Some children arrived with their GM parents married before 1641 and are not treated in GM.
  • ENEF will treat all marriages before 1700.
  • Will include Non-White couples.
  • Will include Non-Protestant couples.
  • Will include couples identified in the last 50 years. (Years since Torrey published)

Research Notes

  • Better define the scope of all related projects, e.g., PGM, GM, ENEF.
  • Highlight all known exceptions:
  • Emmigrant Children and Wives of GM profiles
  • Children born in New England and married before 1700 (Torrey)
  • Non protestant (Non-Puritan) emmigrants to New England
  • People of color who were not profiled but otherwise emigrated by 1641 or married before 1700.

Abbreviations

ENEF Vol. - Early New England Families Book Volume Number.

  • V1 and V2 = Volume 1 and 2. Profiles that are found in this designated volume of Alicia Crane Williams ENEF Books.
  • V3 = Volume 3. [Speculative, see note below]

NOTE: Currently there is no Volume 3. Profiles marked V3 are speculative and based on statements made by Alicia Crane Williams, where she is planning on producing a new volume for every 50 profiles created. V1 and V2 have been published, accounting for the first 100 profiles. It is anticipated that V3 will be produced when she creates a third set of 50 profiles. [ Currently 30 new profiles have been produced since V2. ]

ENEF profiles that meet Puritan Great Migration Project criteria

GM Child = Child of a Great Migration (GM) profile developed by Robert Charles Anderson who emigrated. As such, RCA did not create a separate profile. The ENEF Studay Project may develop these profiles if they meet their project criteria.

GM Wife = Wife of a Great Migration (GM) profile developed by Robert Charles Anderson who emigrated. As such, RCA did not create a separate profile. The ENEF Studay Project may develop these profiles if they meet their project criteria.

PGM = These are interesting profiles. They technically do not meet Andersons strict requirement of evidence supporting arrival in New England before 1641 so he did not create a profile. However, other evidence, as reviewed by the PGM Project, suggests a high likelyhood of being in New England prior to 1641 and therefore the profile is included in the PGM Project. These profiles were picked up by ENEF Study Project as they were married by 1700 in New England [Torrey].

Profiles not part of the Puritan Great Migration Project

ENEE = Early New England Emigrant: Were not part of the Great Migration and are not part of PGM. These are the first Immigrants who came after 1640.

ENEB = Early New England Born: Did not migrate but were born in New England.

ENE? = Early New England Unknown: Origins unknown and no evidence of having migrated.

NOTE: Married females are listed by the surname of their last known husband. Their maiden name is found in the first instance of parenthesis ( ). This is because of the convention used by American Ancestors on their Sketches chart. Subsequent parenthesis provide the surnames aquired from additional husbands in the order of the marriage to each new husband.

Profiles

  • Normal Status = ENEF profiles that also meet PGM Project guidelines.
  • Bold Status = ENEF profiles not part of PGM Project

I reviewed all PGM designated profiles and updated with a new status indicator. There remain a handful of PGM designated profiles. These profiles are ones that Anderson did not treat because they did not meet the GM project criteria. However, their origins suggest that they may have been in NE before 1640 and the PGM Project has decided to include them.

As always, I may have made some mistakes so please let me know if you find any.

As I recall, when this project first started it was in response to a discussion about who qualifies for PGM status on WikiTree. At the time, RCA's Great Migration project was the primary guideline. If a profile was not mentioned in the GM directory, they were not included. The WikiTree PGM Project began to see potential profiles that could possibly be PGM even if not in the GM Directory. The ENEF project became a tool to help capture those who "floated" around the cutoff boundary. As it was not a hard boundary, there was a bit of a grey area. Thus we began to classify these profiles as PGM and Not PGM. As we became more adept at reviewing these profiles. It became clear that Alica Crane Williams had to make similar decisions. While she uses Torrey as her guide for ENEF profiles, she had to differentiate them from those in RCA's GM Directory. RCA did not complete profiles for the children of his (mostly Male) profiles who migrated with them. He also did not complete profiles for the wives who migrated with their husbands. ACW picks up many of these undeveloped profiles as well as those who migrated after 1640 (thus not in the GM Directory) as long as they appear in Torrey.

I have started to explore and designate those profiles that are the children of PGM profiles who were not treated by Anderson (PGM Child). I believe that will make the Not PGM profiles more valuable. These, Not PGM, should be persons who came after 1640. Ideally there should be no PGM profiles in the list or rather, only PGM - Non Anderson profiles (perhaps we need to define these better). Maybe PGM - Not GM profiles, these would be profiles that meet WikiTree's PGM project criteria but not Anderson's GM Directory profiles. Thus making this tool more useful.

So eventually PGM = WikiTree Profiles (not part of this list) PGM - Not GM = Profiles that did not meet Anderson's GM defintion but could possibly still have arrived before 1640 PGM Child = maybe this should be GM Child? Children of GM profiles who did not get treated by Anderson but meet PGM guidelines Not PGM = Profiles that are ENEF and do not meet PGM guidelines.

Correct me if I am wrong. Love to hear your thoughts.

Still a work in progress.

Considering a change.

GM Child and GM Wife. Profiles that meet PGM guidelines and were not developed by Anderson because the husband/father was profiled by Anderson. That is, they are mentioned only as part of the GM profile of the male emmigrant.

Michael, Here is a link to those profiles we have already added to a PGM Child category (we are using it only on those "children" who immigrated by 1640, with a PGM parent): https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Puritan_Great_Migration_Child

Another list shows those spouses we have begun to identify: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Puritan_Great_Migration_Spouse

This work has only just begun; there are many more profiles that can be added to both categories. Sometimes a PGM immigrant is both a spouse of a PGM immigrant, and a "child" of a different PGM immigrant; our rule of thumb is to use only one category: the one that pertained to when they immigrated. Generally, then, if they were married when they immigrated by 1640, they would be categorized as PGM Spouse. If they came with their parents by 1640 and later married a PGM immigrant, they would be categorized as PGM Child.

Here is another question.

Are there profiles that appear to have arrived between 1620 - 1640 who were not or will not be included in Anderson or William's projects?

Thus there would be no verifiable evidence of their arrival by 1640 (Anderson) and not included in Torrey (Williams). I need to review ACW's criteria as she may make some exceptions for not being in Torrey but I do not think so.

From her project introduction.

We’ve designed a plan to avoid losing anyone between our project and the Great Migration Study Project. In the first phase of the Early New England Families Study Project, we will include couples not treated in the Great Migration Study Project whose marriages took place “by 1641,” regardless of their date of immigration or place of marriage. In addition, because many dates of marriage are estimated, we will not try to produce the sketches in chronological order, or in alphabetical or other order. Sketches will be published as research is finished, with some expected to take more time than others.

and

Although “Torrey’s Marriages” is credited with indexing nearly all New England marriages in the seventeenth-century, some exceptions will be addressed in our project. Included in these exceptions are nonwhite and non-Protestant couples, as well as couples identified in the last fifty years.

We have discovered some Heads of Household in New England by 1640, and they were not profiled by Anderson. Perhaps they were by Williams , but we did not look specifically to see if they were. Let’s collaborate further on this idea as well.

It occurs to me that those who arrived after 1640 and did not marry will not be recorded in ENEF. They would not be in Torrey. It would be interesting if we find these persons I should think?

Thanks Michael. Would you please clarify your question? I am not sure I understand what you are asking...

I was mostly musing that the ENEF is not a direct continuance of the GM. They are overlaping circles with different criteria. I think we could use a good definition of these projects and how WikiTree is handling them. Might be fun to draw a venn diagram of these projects and WikiTree's related projects.

Hi Michael. We have created categories for PGM Child and PGM Spouse and have started adding them to PGM immigrants associated with the people Anderson profiled. Let’s talk further; it looks like we can collaborate on these ideas. Many thanks for raising this important topic.

Thank you again, Michael, for this marvelous page.

I don't have a real contribution for suggested citations; developed the far-from-perfect formats below based on a reference note in a recent Register article. Suggestions welcome.

Hi GeneJ X,

My original intent was to create citations based on Evidence Explained. I just have not taken the time to work those out. Yours are good too. But I just started using what others had as I checked each profile. Many versions exist and I did not want to hunt them all down an replace them knowning they would likely change anyway. Now I just make sure there is a link to the American Ancestor profile and something that looks like a citation. Also, I am not sure how exact they would be given how they are used on WikiTree. But I would like to see more Genealogical Proof Standards being used on WikiTree where possible and appropriate. I just do not have that time these days.

Thanks for the nice comments.

This is a great resource Michael. I'm curious about the Volume column: all of the ones I took a look at that said Volume 3, were covered in an earlier volume. Is something else intended by the V3? Also, is there somewhere that you can see on American Ancestors who is going to be included in Volume 3? I looked at the Early New England Sketches you have linked, but didn't see it.

Thank you for putting this together!

Hi S,

Can you give me someone specific? Alicia put the 1st 50 persons in Vol 1, the 2nd 50 in Vol 2. The list reflects this and you can compare them to the books and her sketches list where she indicates whose profiles are included in what volume. My list matches hers. perhaps those marked V3 are mentioned in the other books but they do not have profiles. I did make the assumption that the next 50 persons will be in Vol 3. I do believe she mentioned something like this in one of her blog posts. You can sort the columns on my list by volume.

Thanks, Michael.

Two examples are George Blake and William Lord. Both are in this list as V3, but they both have their own profiles in ENEF.

I will also take a look at her blog posts.

Update: I am wondering if what appears on American Ancestors is ahead of V3. That could be it. From her blog it looks like George Blake, at least, was just added in May. S

Yes, V3 has not been produced yet. The profiles have been created but not published in a book. Since publication of V2, She has created about 25 new profiles thus far. When she creates another 25, for a total of 50, she will then produce V3. (50 profiles per volume).

I just completed a review of all profiles to ensure that they have the ENEF source. Where the source already existed, there were several variations of how the source was added. As long as it mentioned the ENEF project and database I generally left it alone. There were a few I updated a bit.

PGM = Meets PGM Guidlines, may be templated but needs double checked.

Not PGM, falls outside PGM parameters or need to be determinined.

These still need a second round of review and I have started updating them if they are treated by Anderson.

Michael, two things:

1. Would you please add the PGM Project Account to the Trusted List for this page, so we could track changes to it?

2. When you say "PGM" by a name-- does that mean they are already PGM-templated here? Or should be? Or? And that "Not PGM" means they fall outside of PGM's 1621-1640 time frame?

Three things!:

3. Nice work. Thanks for doing this. ;-)
