Biography

Nancy Snow was born about 1802.

She married Isaac Barton (b. 1799; SC/d. 1865; TX) 11-27-1819 by Jonathan York, J.P. in Blount Co., AL. [1]

Nancy Barton was listed in the 1850 Census. [2]

Research Note:[3]

When Nancy Snow married Isaac Barton in 1817, she was only 15 years old and an orphan. The marriage had to be approved by the Orphan's Court in Alabama, which it was.[4]

There were No Snow families living in Georgia on either the 1790 or 1800 US Census reports, so Nancy Snow was not born in Oconee County, Georgia, as some family genealogies state. However, there was a Snow family living near Oconee County, South Carolina, then. It was the family of William and Margaret (Nesmith) Snow. On RootsWeb, they are listed as having a son, Samuel Nesmith Snow, b: 13 Mar 1790 in Georgetown District, South Carolina.[5] William Snow died on November 16, 1807. On the 1810 US Census, his widow, Margaret Snow, is listed as "head of household," with a daughter under 10 years old. Although not named, this was doubtlessly Nancy Snow.[6] Margaret remarried shortly thereafter to William J. Ferdon. Nancy married Isaac Barton, also from Oconee, South Carolina, when both were in Alabama. He was 20 years old.

While not definitely "proven," the preponderance of evidence is that Nancy Snow was the daughter of William and Margaret (Nesmith) Snow. One more snippet that supports this theory is that Samuel N. Snow (who would have been her older brother and perhaps informal guardian after 1810) married at 16 in Georgia and then later moved to Alabama after his 1st wife died.
