Morgan Smith was a private in Co. D, 6th North Carolina Infantry. Born in 1833 in Pitt County, North Carolina. Morgan was a cooper and a farmer before enlisting. He was captured at Winchester, VA on July 20, 1864, and died on January 20, 1865, at Camp Chase of smallpox, leaving a wife, Elizabeth, and three sons, John D., Everett, and Pinkney Smith.
