In 1785, Col. James Smith, a widower with seven children, married a widow, Margaret (Rodgers Irvin, who had moved with her children from Hats Creek, Virginia to Bourbon, Kentucky in 1781 or 1782.

He likely died on the 11th April 1813 at the home of Mr. John Rodgers, Green County, Kentucky.

During his life James was a pioneer, soldier and author.[1]
