Mary (Smallwood) Spencer was born in Appalachia, in Kentucky.

Mary Elizabeth Smallwood was born on 31 January 1916 in Menifee County, Kentucky, United States^[1], daughter of Roy Ray Smallwood and Bessie Miller.

In the 1920 census Mary (age 3y, 11 m) was the daughter of Roy Smallwood in Menifee County, Kentucky.^[2]

In the 1930 census Mary (age 13) was the daughter of Roy Smallwood in Middletown, Lemon Township, Butler, Ohio.^[3]

In the 1950 census Mary (age 33) was the wife of Darley Spencer in Oneida, Middletown, Butler, Ohio.^[4]

Mary died (age 87) on 27 July 2003 in Lebanon, Warren, Ohio^[5][6][7] and was buried in Woodside Cemetery and Arboretum, Middletown, Butler County, Ohio.^[8]

Research Notes

• Note the Ohio death index has an incorrect translation of the death location (Warrenton, Warren Township, Jefferson, Ohio). She died in Lebanon, Warren, Ohio.

• Mary and Darley may have only been married a short time. He had been married previously and all the children seen in the 1950 census were from his prior marriage. Additional children not seen with Darley & Mary in 1950, some likely still living, were either residing with their mother or were born after 1950, indicating Darley went back to his first wife. The children are all listed in the obituary of Darley's first wife seen at FindAGrave.^[9]
