Lucy Diggs Slowe was an American educator and athlete. She was the first Black woman to win a major sport league championship and the first Black woman to serve as Dean of Women at any American university

1883: Lucy was born in Clarke County, Virginia on 4 July 1883[1] Her parents were Charles Henry Slowe and Frances "Fanny" (Potter) Slowe.[2]

1884: Lucy's father, (Charles) Henry died in Clarke County on 11 April 1884.[3]

1889: Lucy's mother, Frances, died in Berryville, Clarke, Virginia on 10 October 1889.[4]

1900: Recorded on 1900 U.S. census living with the family of her cousin James Steward in Baltimore, Maryland's 14th Ward.[5]

1904: Graduated second in her class from Baltimore Colored School.[6]

1908: Lucy cofounded and served as first president of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first Black sorority.[7]The Alpha Kappa Alpha shield is apple green and salmon pink; and the motto of AKA is "By Culture and By Merit".

1908: Class valedictorian when graduated from Howard University.[6]

1910: Recorded on the 1910 U.S. census in the same Baltimore household as in 1910, but her cousin's name was recorded as Joseph.[8] Lucy's sister Charlotte also lived with the family.

1915: Graduated with a Masters[6] from Columbia Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.[9]

1917: Won the American Tennis Association championship - the first major sports championship won by a Black woman.[10]

1917: After graduating with her Masters, Lucy helped create and taught in a high school for Black students in Washington. D.C. She was recorded as a teacher at the school in the 1917 Washington, District of Columbia, City Directory.[11]

1920: Recorded both rooming with the Hauston family in Washington, D.C.,[12] and living with her cousins and sister in Baltimore[13] on the 1920 U.S. census.

1922: Selected by Howard University as it's first Dean of Women.[6] She served at Howard in administrative positions for the next 15 years.[6]

1937: Lucy died at her home on Kearny Street in Washington, D.C. on 21 October 1937.[14] Her funeral was held in the chapel at Howard on 24 October, and she was interred at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Suitland, Prince George's County, Maryland.[15]
