Alois was born Alois Slavik in Aujezdsko, Kremsier, Mähren, Kaiserthum Oesterreich (now Újezdsko, Kroměříž, Zlínský kraj, Česká republika or Ujezdsko, Moravia, Czech republic) on 4 Feb 1861.[1][2][3][4]

Alois, a farmer,[3][4] came to Texas in December of 1903 with the remaining family arriving the next spring in Galveston[5] . . . except for Alois, Jr. who jumped off the wagon leaving town and ran home immigrating two years later. Their new home was in Cameron Texas.

Residence

Austria

1861-1880(?): Ujezdsko, Moravia, Austria[6]
1884-1904: Palacky St (now 44 Kojetinska St.), Kromeriz, Moravia, Austria[7]

Immigration

Czechs were tied to their lands until the Revolutions of 1848 ended the restrictions for immigration[8].

Immigration voyage on the Chemnitz.
Immigration to Texas was common for the Czech for economic reasons or other causes and the Slavik family, like others, decided to join the Czechs in Texas. As mentioned above, Alois arrived first . . . on the Chemnitz. The main family came on the Hannover, and Alois, Jr., two years later, also on the Chemnitz. The family was naturalized on 24 May 1909[4]

Alois died of pneumonia on 11 Feb 1925[9][10]

Research Notes

  • The name 'Alois' is the equivalent of the Anglo 'Louis.' The surname 'Slavik' in Czech means 'nightingale.' Alois did not seem to use the Anglo version often.
  • unnamed child born 1899???
