Frances (Slavik) Mollari was a centenarian, living to age 100.
Frances (Slavik) Mollari has Czech Roots.
Frances (Slavik) Mollari migrated from Österreich to Texas.
Fanny was born Frantiska Slavikova in Kromeriz, Moravia on 22 Dec 1892[1] in Austria (now part of of the Czech Republic). The given name 'Frantiska' is the equivalent of the Anglo 'Frances.' The surname is the feminine form of 'Slavik,' which in Czech means 'nightingale.' Czech custom is to add 'a' or 'ova' to the masculine form so that the masculine 'Slavik' becomes the feminine 'Slavikova.' In America, only the masculine form is used and, although the family used Anglo versions of the given names, the surname remained untranslated so we see the name 'Frances Slavik' rather than 'Frances Nightingale' even though 'Nightingale' has been used in England since before the Norman invasion (e.g. Florence Nightingale more recently).
Alois, Sr., her father, came to Texas in December of 1903 with the remaining family arriving the next spring in Galveston[2] . . . except for Alois, Jr. who jumped off the wagon leaving town and ran home immigrating two years later. Fanny was only 11 when they arrived at their new home in Cameron Texas. As she matured, though, her parents found it difficult to keep her at the farm. After a number of unruly years, she was sent, at age 19, to O'Neil, Nebraska to be the housekeeper at St. Patick's Catholic Church. The assistant pastor at the time was a 26 year old priest named Father Flanagan. It is not known how long or how well she served the rectory, but the assistant pastor went on to create "Boys Town" and she returned to Texas, first returning to her parents house in Milam County[3], then moving to Penelope to keep house for another priest.
The other priest was Oscar Mollari, who had come to America in 1920 but by 1923 they had met and were in the family way. Their child, Erna, was born in Oklahoma City on 3 Feb 1924. That the couple elected to travel 272 miles from Penelope, Texas to Oklahoma City rather than 27 miles to Waco or 69 miles to Dallas was likely related to the fact that being a celibate priest with a child was an embarrassment. In April of 1924, Oscar's brother Mario arrived from Tyrol[4]. Staying in Texas was not the best option and although Oscar could have remained with the church posing as a converted Anglican priest, his daughter's mother, Fannie, did not favor that plan. Possibly using his connections with the church, work was found for Mario at the Jesuit Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. teaching microbiology. The four soon were in Washington where the couple married[5]. They had a second child soon after.
Czechs were tied to their lands until the Revolutions of 1848 ended the restrictions for immigration[7].
Immigration voyage - Hannover I
Immigration to Texas was common for the Czech for economic reasons or other causes and the Slavik family, like others, decided to join the Czechs in Texas. As mentioned above, Alois arrived first . . . on the Chemnitz. The main family came on the Hannover,[8] and Alois, Jr., two years later, also on the Chemnitz. The family was naturalized on 24 May 1909[3]
