Biography

Katherine was born August 14, 1918 in Westerville, Ohio. She was the daughter of Carleton Skeele and Edna Barnes.

She married Frederick Henson Kelling on June 11, 1936 in Franklin County, Ohio, USA. She was aged 17, and Fred was aged 22. Consent to the marriage was signed by her father, Carl D. Skeele. The marriage record notes her mother was deceased. [1]

Katherine and Fred had six children, all born in Ohio. Their oldest child was born in 1938 and the youngest in 1949. They divorced some time after 1949. [2]

Katherine remarried to Edward Hovis around 1958. They had one child together.

Katherine was granted a divorce from Edward Hovis after 16 years of marriage, on October 3, 1974. [3]

Katherine passed away suddenly at her home in Delaware, Ohio on September 20, 1989. She was 71 years old, the cause of death was likely a brain aneurysm. [4]

Her obituary was published on Friday, September 22, 1989 in the newspaper The Delaware Gazette, in Delaware, Ohio, USA. It read:

"Catherine J. Hovis, age 71, of 2240 Bruce Road, died Wednesday (Sept 20 1989) at her home. She was born on August 14, 1918 in Westerville, Ohio and spent most of her life in Delaware County She was a member of Witnesses of Delaware County. Survivors include one sister Dorothy Louise Robley of Burton. 20 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers Clark and George Skeele. Calling hours will be today from 7PM to 9 PM at the Bennett Brown Funeral Home, 92 Sandusky Street. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 PM at Jehovah Witnesses Kingdom Hall with Kenneth Clark officiating. Burial will be in Otterbein Cemetery, Westerville, Ohio." [5]

She was buried in Old Section, Lot 304, Grave 6 at Otterbein Cemetery in Westerville, Franklin County, Ohio, USA. Her gravestone reads "Katherine Jane Hovis Aug. 14, 1918 - Sept. 20, 1989" [6]

•Note: Different records for Katherine, including her published obituary, list her first name spelled with a "C." According to her gravestone, [7] and the recollection of her granddaughter, Tina (Van Dyke) Smith, she used a "K" when writing her own name. [8]
