Biography

Private Henry Sing was a Union soldier captured by the Confederate forces at the Battle of Sulphur Branch Trestle and was imprisoned at Richmond, Va and later at Cahaba, Al. Private Sing was exchanged at Vicksburg. He was thought to have perished in the Sultana explosion. However, he survived. He was hospitalized at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. and sent to Camp Chase, Ohio where he died from bronchitis.

Henry was born in 1821. He passed away in 1865. [1][2]

  • Residence 1860: Henry Sing (age 39) was a farmer living in 10th District, Sevier County, Tennessee. Included in his household were: Martha Sing (age 27), Elizabeth Sing (age 7), Thomas Sing (age 5), Fanny Sing (age 4), John Sing (age 2), and Levina Sing (age 5 months). [3]

On October 30, 1865, the widow of Private Henry Sing filed Application No. 114, 011 for a Civil War widow's pension. Her application was approved, and she received Certificate No. 81,569. On August 25, 1870, his minor children filed Application No. 189,474. Their application was approved and they received Certificate No. 145,625. [4]

On February 7, 1852, Henry Sing married Martha C Manes in Sevier County, Tennessee. They had 5 children:

John H, born October 3, 1857
Melvina, born March 23, 1860.

Martha Sing married John Sing (Henry's younger brother) on March 29, 1870, in Sevier County, Tennessee. Martha Sing was 23 years old and living in Sevier County, Tennessee when she filed the original application. When Martha Sing remarried, Thomas Pickens was appointed guardian of the minor children (Elizabeth was now 16). [5]
