Margaret Trudeau is an author, actress, photographer, former television talk show hostess, and mental health advocate.
Margaret, daughter of James Sinclair and Doris Bernard, was born in Vancouver, British Columbia on 10 Sep 1948. Her father had served as an RCAF pilot during the Second World War. He was later elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) and served as federal fisheries minister in the Cabinet of Liberal prime minister Louis St-Laurent from 1952 until 1957.
She married Pierre Trudeau, the 15th prime minister of Canada, in 1971, three years after he became prime minister. They divorced in 1984, during his final months in office. She is the mother of five children including Justin Trudeau, the 23rd and current prime minister of Canada.
After her 2001 diagnosis of bipolar disorder, Margaret became a public advocate for mental health. The Margaret Trudeau Advocacy Award is presented annually to honour those who have dedicated their lives to reducing the stigma and improving the dialogue about mental illness.
Margaret has written four books: Beyond Reason (1979), Consequences (1982), Changing My Mind: A Memoir (2010) and The Time of Your Life: Choosing a Joyful, Vibrant Future (2015).
In 2008, she was the subject of an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? - Canada.[1][2]
In 2019, she wrote and performed a one-woman act, Certain Woman of an Age.
