João (John) and Alexandrina (Alice) migrated to Hawai'i aboard the SS Bell in 1883 with their children Joseph and Mary Glora.[3][4] A daughter they named Maria was born on the 31st of October, just days before they arrived.[3] Their children Manuel, George, Alfred, Mary Sylvana, and Josephine "Jessie" Pereira were all born in Hawaii.[4][5] John and Alice had returned to Portugal by 1990 as Jacintho was born in Feteiras that year.[6] John arrived not two years later, also born in Feteiras.[7] When he was just two years old the family made their final trip back to Hawai'i.[8] Five years later John and Alice owned their home in Hilo and he was working as a laborer.[4] Ten years after that they were still in Hilo.[5] John was fifty-six years old and was retired, Alice was fifty-four and took care of the home.[5] Their son John worked as a Delivery Boy for a Meat Market.[5] Their son Alfred worked as a Laborer in a Planing Mill.[5] Their son-in-law Manuel Morgado (from Portugal) worked at a Planing Mill also.[5] Their grandchildren Alvira, John, and Joe Morgado were not yet old enough to go to school.[5] Alice and John could not read or write, nor speak English.[5] This large family of twelve lived in a home on Volcano street, with three incomes supporting them.[5]

In 1920 Manuel was the only single child still living at home, with no occupation listed.[9] Alice's married daughter Silvana (Perreira) Amoral was also living there with her husband Manuel (from Portugal) and son David Amoral.[9] Manuel was working as a driver at an auto track. Manuel and Philomena had moved down the street and lived with their children Alvera, John, Joseph, Emelia, Jacintho, Manuel, Alice, and Alfred Morgado.[9]

Alice died on the 12th of May 1924 in Hilo.[1][10] Cause of death was pernicious anemia.[1] She had lived to the age sixty-eight. Alice was laid to rest in the Alae Cemetery in Hilo.[1][10] She was survived by her husband John and her children Glora, Philomena, Manuel, George, John, Alfred, and Jessie. A strong Portuguese woman, she had braved the move to a new country, raised a large family, and lived a full life. Descansar bem Alexandrina, rest well...

Research Notes

17 May 2018: I received information regarding the passport query I had sent to the Portuguese Archives. Johns wife's name was Alexandrina Amélia da Conceição, the daughter of Vincent José da Silva and Maria Eugenia. The document and accompanying information are in my possession.(Silva-1055 15:51, 17 May 2018 (UTC))
24 Jan 2021: I received Alexandrina's death certificate in the mail. The certifier, V. E. Mosomo, M.D., did not fully understand the spelling of Portuguese names. Her name was listed as "Alexandrinha Gonsalvez Pereira" and her mothers name as "Maria Orgina." (Silva-1055 15:51, 24 January 2021 (UTC))
Original Notes:
Alice is a bit of a mystery to me still. Possible first names are: LÍgia, Joanna, Gina, Lisanjane, or Aliciana. One of the youngest daughters, the twin Jessie, took the name 'Mendonça' after she was of age. This would infer a family name, but I don't know if that was Alice's mothers name. Conceicão was my current guess for a last name. I added Lichettira in case they were trying to give her maiden name on the 1920 census. UPDATE: The Portuguese Archives has confirmed that her name was Alexandrina. She came from the parish of Feteiras in the Azores.
