João "John" Gonçalves Pereira was born on the 23rd of July 1854, and baptized on the 6th of August, in the parish of Feteiras in the Açores.[1] He was the legitimate son of António Gonçalves, and Florinda Rosa.[1][2]

John met and married Alexandrina Amélia "Alice" da Conceição in Portugal.[2] The blessed event took place on the 27th of January in 1879.[2] Their first two children, Joseph and Glora, were born in the parish of Feteiras.[3][4] John and Alice boarded the SS Bell in 1883 and traveled to the Sandwich Islands (Hawai'i).[5] A daughter they named Maria was born on the 31st of October, just days before they arrived.[6] The SS Bell carried 1411 passengers, 530 of which were children under the age of twelve.[7] There were five births on that voyage and eight deaths (seven children and one 'old man').[7]

Two more children were born to them over the next five years, Philomena and Manuel.[5][8] John and Alice returned to Portugal to set their affairs in order by the year 1893 as their son John was born in Feteiras.[9] Two years later little Alfred was born, in Feteiras as well.[10] When Alfred was just eight months old they made their final journey back to Hawai'i.[11] The twins Mary Sylvana, and Josephine "Jessie" Pereira were born in Hawai'i on the 25th of July 1899.[5][8]

John owned his own home in Hilo, Hawaii in 1900, and listed his occupation as Laborer.[5] By 1910 John was fifty-six years old and was retired.[8] His son John worked as a Delivery Boy for a Meat Market.[8] His son Alfred worked as a Laborer in a Planing Mill. His son-in-law Manuel Morgado (from Portugal) worked at a Planing Mill also.[8] His grandchildren Alvira, John, and Joe Morgado were not yet old enough to go to school. John and his wife Alexandrina could not read or write, nor speak English.[8] This large family of twelve lived in a home on Volcano street, with three incomes supporting them. In 1920 Manuel was the only single child still living at home, with no occupation listed.[12] John's married daughter Silvana (Perreira) Amoral was also living there with her husband Manuel (from Portugal) and son David Amoral. Manuel was working as a driver at an auto track. Manuel and Philomena had moved down the street and lived with their children Alvera, John, Joseph, Emelia, Jacintho, Manuel, Alice, and Alfred Morgado.

John Pereira passed away 20 March 1937 in Hilo, Hawaii.[13] He was predeceased by his wife Alexandrina, son Joe, and daughter Mary (a twin to Jessie). He was survived by his children Glora, Philomena, Manuel, George, John, Alfred, and Jessie. This strong, proud Portuguese man left behind children and grandchildren that loved him, as well a strong sense of family for them to carry on.

Research Notes

Pereira, a common surname in the regions of the former Portuguese Empire, was taken from the feudal possession of Pereira, Portugal, which in Portuguese means 'pear tree'. (per wikipedia) The name was 'Amercanized' by many immigrants to 'Perry.'
This family has been puzzling and hard to unravel. John's wife never learned to speak English, and her accent may have been heavy. None of the census takers used the same name for her. It was thought at one point that they came from Madeira, as the other migrating ancestors had - but the 1900 census record states they were from the Azores, not Madeira. It has been confirmed from the Archives of Portugal that the John that traveled to Hawaii in 1895, with matching children's names and birth years, was married to Alexandrina Amélia da Conceição. They came from the parish of Feteiras, Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Portugal.(Silva-1055 12:40, 17 May 2018 (UTC))
