He was a member of Capt. Joab Brooks' Company in Chatham County, NC during the Revolutionary War.

Married Margaret Rafferty (b. 12 Oct 1767 in VA d. 15 Jan 1839 in Bumcombe Co., NC) c. 1783 in VA. They moved to South Carolina in 1787, then Buncombe Co., North Carolina in 1805 and Macon Co., NC in 1827.
