John was born in 1858. He is the son of James Sidebottom and Margaret Nowell. His birth was registered at Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire in the 1st quarter of 1858. (NB The transcript on Familysearch mis-spells his muddle name as Nowell.)
The 1871 census records him at Ashton-under-Lyne, birthplace Stalybridge.[1]
