Biography

Joanna was born on 15 Oct 1943 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and her parents were Marie Teresa (Petrie) and Joseph Shimkus.

While her father was away, serving in the Royal Canadian Navy, Joanna spent her early years in Halifax being raised by her mother and grandmother (who had 11 children of her own).

In the 1950s Joanna's parents moved the family from Halifax to Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

About 1958 her parents separated and divorced about 1965. In the meantime, in about 1962, Joanna travelled to Paris, France where she modelled for Elle magazine. Between 1964 and 1968, she also made some films in Europe. Upon her return to the United States in 1968, she continued act in films in Hollywood, California, until 1972.

On 23 Jan 1976, Joanna married film star Sidney Poitier in Los Angeles, California[1] They had 2 daughters (Anika Poitier and Sydney Tamiia Poitier).

She exemplifies a prime example of the guiding principle that all genealogists must heed: that family legends are worthless as their lack of documentation. It has long been understood that her mother is of Irish origin, but the documented ancestry says "French-Canadian" to the exclusion of practically all else. "Irish origin" is a favorite myth for some reason... family legends may point one in a valid direction, but they can mislead. Firm belief in a myth does not make the belief so.
