Frederick was born in Congleton, Cheshire, England, in 1875.^[1] He was the son of Samuel Sherratt and Mary Cartlidge. He was baptized on October 27, 1875, in Congleton, at St Peter.^[2] He was enumerated in the 1881 census ^[3] as a five year old residing with his parents and five siblings on Wheelock Street, Congleton. In 1891, ^[4] the family was living on Crewe Road, Christ Church, Cheshire.
