Abraham Sherman (Shearman), son of Phillip Sherman and Hannah Smith, was born in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, 30 Nov 1713.[1] Settled by Europeans in about 1652 and named for the town of the same name in Devon, England, the town of Dartmouth hugs the southern coast of modern Massachusetts, bordered on the north by Fall River, east by New Bedford, west by Westport and south by Buzzard's Bay.[2]

At age 44, Abraham, in Dartmouth, 13 Apr 1758, married 32 year-old Mary (Chase) Howland, the widow of Benjamin Howland.[4]
Abraham died in Dartmouth, 18 Jun 1773, at age 59.[5] He was survived by his wife, Mary, who died in Dartmouth, 11 Dec 1786, at age 60.[6]

The Province of Massachusetts Bay, "chartered on October 7, 1691, by William III and Mary II, the joint monarchs of the kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland," "took effect on May 14, 1692, and [initially merged] the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the Plymouth Colony, the Province of Maine, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.[8]
