One of the earliest African Americans to become a missionary for the Presbyterian Church, William Henry Sheppard is best known for his efforts to publicize the atrocities committed against the Kuba and other Congolese peoples of Africa. Possibly the first African-American collector of African art, his collection is on display at the Hampton University Museum.[1]
William Henry was born in 1865, the son of William Sheppard & Fanny (Morton) Sheppard. In the 1880 census William (age 15), is enumerated in the household of William H. Shepperd in Waynesboro, Augusta, Virginia, United States.[2]
At age twenty-two, he married Mary E. Mallory (age 21) on 5 November 1887 in Richmond, Virginia, United States.[3]
He married again at age twenty-nine to Lucy J. Grant (age 28) on 21 February 1894 in Duval, Florida, United States.[4]
In the 1900 census William (age 35) was the married brother-in-law of James F Anderson in Staunton, Augusta, Virginia, United States.[5]
Returning from Africa, Sheppard was pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church in Louisville from 1912 until his death in 1927. One of the city's most respected African American leaders, he was known for his work in the Smoketown community [6]. Sheppard Park (1924) and Sheppard Square Housing Project (1942) named in his honor. [7]
William died on 25 November 1927 and was buried in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky, United States.[8][9][10]
