Biography

Janet Shaw is a member of Clan Shaw.

Janet was the daughter of Sir James Shaw[1][2][3] and Christian Bruce.

She married Sir Archibald Edmonstone, 3rd Laird Edmonstone.[1][2] They had two sons and seven daughters;

  1. Sir William, captain of Doune, (succeeded his father: Sir Archibald), 4th Laird Edmonstone d. 9 Sep 1513,[1][2]
  2. James, progenitor of the Ballinton branch, m. Agnes, daughter of James Ridheugh of Tillychadell, and was Comptroller of Scotland under James IV.[1]
  1. Janet, b 15 Apr 1506, m. William, 1st Earl of Montrose[4]
  2. Christian, m. John, Lord Ross of Halkhead,[4] b. May 1551
  3. Elizabeth, m. John, Master of Montgomery eldest son of Hugh, first Earl of Eglinton[4][5][6]
  4. Margaret, m. 1st George Buchanan of that ilk[4]
  5. Barbara, m. Sir James Muschet of Burnbank, in Perthshire[4]
  6. Catherine[4]
  7. Helen[4]

Research Notes

Janet's marriage was before 1490 places her birth prior to 1478. Her daughter Christian's marriage, however, was before 27 Sep 1490. This in turn places her daughter Christian's birth prior to 27 Sep 1478. this would Janet's marriage prior to 1478 and, thus, Janet's birth prior to 1466.

Although some sources list her father as Sir, James Shaw of Sauchy. The mother is not mentioned , making it unclear whether she is the sister or daughter of the James Shaw who married Christian Bruce.

"The Family of Edmonstone" maintains it was the elder was the father[1] . Other sources place her as the child of the younger James. Many of the vital dates are gross estimates but, so far, the ones we can verify seem to favor Janet is the daughter of the younger James.

For a general treatment of "Shaw of Sauchie" see the work of Marshall.[7]

Shaw-710 and Shaw-14130 appear to represent the same person because: Appear to be the same profile. One of the mothers is incorrect, although sources vary as to which is correct.

Gloria,

The highland Shaw's were a completely different family as far as I can discover. Possibly connected in the 1500's. I hope I can find a link. However I have trouble finding one. If you can it would be great. The Janet you are talking about married and lived locally. Her daughter married back into the family the next generation back. This james shaw is famous as his daughter was mistress to James the IV.
