Joshua B. Sharp was only 14 years old at the time of his father's death. Perhaps he was the youngest child since he is mentioned the least in his father's will. A family history compiled by Winifred Kinsey shows that Joshua B. Sharp is the son of Noah and Elizabeth Sharp and married Mercy A. Steward who was the daughter of Josiah and Mercy Steward. Mercy A. Steward was born July 8,1803 and died June 2, 1868. Joshua B. Sharp was born in New Jersey according to the 1850 Federal Census for Randolph County,Indiana. His first four children were born in New Jersey prior to 1839. He is also found in the 1840 Federal Census for Randolph County, Indiana, indicating that he migrated to Randolph County in late 1839 or early 1840.

The religious affiliation of Joshua Sharp is not certain. we do know that the earlier Sharp generations were Quaker. Joshua, his wife Mercy, and many family members are buried in Union Chapel Cemetery near Carlos, IN. It is likely that the Sharps were members of this congregation.
Joshua made a will in Randolph County, Indiana, October 24 1863. An abstract of the will states he left the home farm and personal property to his wife Mercy Ann. At the time of her death the home farm was to go to son Samuel Sharp. The balance was to be divided among the remaining children except for one horse which was to go to a granddaughter, Mary Jane Hockett. Joshua B. Sharp was only 14 years old at the time of his father's death. Perhaps he was the youngest child since he is mentioned the least in his father's will.
