European Aristocracy
William Sempill was a member of the aristocracy in Scotland.

William was the 2nd Lord Sempill.[1][2][3] He was on the Privy Counsel to James V of Scotland. Although close to the center of power, he was involved in many feuds in the country as a principle in some and as an ally in others.[4] In 1537, he sat on the jury for the trial of Lady Glamis.[5] In 1547, at the eath of Alan, 3rd Lord Cathcart, he became guardian of Alan, 4th Lord Cathcart.

He married first Margaret Montgomery, eldest daughter of Hugh, first Earl of Eglintoun.[1][2][6][7][8] They had issue:

  1. Robert, Third Lord Sempill[1]
  2. David,[1] d. aft. 12 Mar 1553
  3. Ninian, d. aft. 23 Feb 1563
  4. William, d. w/o issue
  5. Peter, d. aft. 18 Oct 1558
  6. Helen,[1] married Alan, third Lord Cathcart who died at Pinkie[9][10]
  7. Mary,[1] married Sir John Stirling of Keir

He married second, Elizabeth, daughter of John Arnot of Arnot.[1][2][11]

He married third Marion Montgomerie, daughter of Montgomery of Hassilhead.[1][2][12][13]

Research Notes

William was a legal witness in 1502 and as the minimum age was 14, one can place his birth prior to 1488. Observing that he had five sons of full age as of 1526, one can infer the eldest child was born before 1501 and that WIlliam would have been born prior to 1486. His younger brother Francis was of full age on 4 Mar 1501/2 placing his birth before 4 Mar 1480/81 and that of William (allowing a minimum gestation of 37 weeks) before 18 Jun 1480.
William received the lands of Beltrees,[14] which eventually were inherited by his son Robert who then awarded them to his son, William's grandson, John.
Confirmed 24 Jan 1543 in the barony of Craginfeaich.[15]

Done, Thom. Thanks for the nudge.

Relatively minor change was made to birth year (see research notes). There is now a conflict with daughter Janet, who does not seem to be documented as a child of William.

I would welcome this being addressed as Janet is supposed to be my 13th great grandmother. This rather stops me in my tracks not knowing if she is indeed my family or just popped into the slot to hold a place. And it doesn't help any that her "father" would have only been 13 years of age when she was born. Not that it couldn't have happened, obviously, but....

Please, I have yet to see a charter which spells this surname any other way than Sempill. What reliable source do you have for places of birth and death? This should be interesting.
