Johann Schusterschitz was born out of wedlock on 22 June 1828 in Kleinriegel #3, Gottschee, Krain, Austria (present-day Mali Rigelj, Dolenjske Toplice, Slovenia) to Maria Schusterschitz and Johann Tomschitsch.[1][2] His mother died a few months later and he was subsequently raised by his father. Johann received his first communion on 25 April 1836, and on 19 September 1840 he was confirmed as a Catholic at the church in Reuter.[2]
At some point in his childhood (possibly immediately after his mother's passing), he and his father relocated to his father's hometown of Reuter (present-day Laze, Novo Mesto, Slovenia), first living in house #1 before moving to house #9.[2][3][4] He was living here at the time of his marriage, where he is listed as the illegitimate son of Johann Tomschitsch.[4][5]
Johann married Maria Klobutscher of Reuter #12 on 21 November 1858 in Reuter and lived and had nine children together in house #12.[5][6][7] He eventually became a land owner sometime before 1869, owning house #12 and surrounding farmland.[7]
Johann died on 10 June 1897 in Reuter #12 and was buried two days later.[8]
