Gertraud "Gertrude" Schoepf was born to Johann Jakob Schoepf and Anna Margaretha Wolf in Germany on September 14, 1800. [1] and was christened 17 September 1800 in Raibach (Kr. Dieburg), Hessen, Germany. [2]

Gertrude and Henry emigrated to the US on October 1 1831 and arrived in the port of Baltimore, Maryland. [3] On the record, Gertrude was listed as age 30 and was accompanied by Henry. Her sex was incorrectly documented as male and she held the occupation of farm.

Marriage

Images of record are on this page.

Rough translation of document from German to English In the year of Christ one thousand eight hundred thirty, the 2 and twentieth (or twentysecond) August, were…(many words unable to translate)…that being…private…that no…hindernis (reservations) …in willingness of the mom of the groom and the relatives of the bride… married Heinrich Appel, son of deceased Heinrich Appel former local citizen with Anna Helena nee Kapp, legitimate sired unmarried son …citizen of here, age nine and twenty years and Gertraude {dau} of deceased Jacob Schopp former local citizen with {wife} Margaretha nee Wolf legitimate sired unmarried daughter …30 years whereby the marriage gave notice that he from the bride illegitimate child with the name Anna Margaretha who the 12 Jan of this year was born and the 17th of the same month christened was for by him sired is recognized. Witnesses were the schoolteacher Johanes Wolff of here, the loyal citizen David Schopp who this document along with the groom and pastor-vicar who the marriage performed signed have. (Witnesses signed the document) the schoolteacher Johanes Wolf and local citizen David(?) Schoop who have signed the document along with the pastor who performed the marriage(unreadable).

A copy of this document was obtained by Eleanor (Norris) Adams in the 1980’s, most likely from a European source (I can claim to noting international envelopes in her records years ago). She presented it to someone who had skills in reading German script and the translation was overwritten on the page. The source of the marriage record is lost as Eleanor’s physical files became muddled 20 years after her death. I have supplied the transcription as well as copies of the marriage record from a register book. Janet (Adams) Demcoe 27 July 2023 Adams-36348 23:54, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
