Research Notes

Excerpt from Genealogy and Family History of the State of Maine by George Thomas Little published by Lewis Publishing, New York, 1909; Volume III, page 1444:[6]

"John Sawyer was a farmer in Lincolnshire, where he is supposed to have been a landowner, also. He was the father of three sons, William, Edward and Thomas who left England on a ship commanded by Captain Parker and settled in Massachusetts about 1636. Edward, son of john, brought over with him from England his wife, whose maiden name was Mary Peasley, with their children Mary, Henry and James and settled first in Ipswich and then in Rowley. No more is known of Edward or his wife,"

Notes

  • He is sometimes said to have been in Ipswich in 1635. This is confusing him with Edmund Sawyer of Ipswich - they are not the same person.

I note that Margery Jackson was 38 years older than Edward Sawyer, I have also seen it suggested that she was a wife of his father, John Sawyer (Family Search LHZ8-5G4). Is there any support for her being Edward's wife?

This Mary appears to be the incorrect spouse. Some of the children were born before she was even born, and many were born when she was too young to have had them. Could Edward have had another wife before her? their marriage date is shown as before only the last two children.
