Biography

Mary was born 29th November 1771 and baptised 8th December 1771 at St. Peter in Thanet, Kent, England, the daughter of Thomas Sandwel and Susanna Sandwel^[1]

Mary had a son Thomas Sandwell born about 1788, Margate, Kent, England, although no baptism has been located. Circumstantial evidence (the fact that Richard Offen & Charlotte Offen were witnesses at Thomas' marriage) suggests that Mary is his mother, but there is no evidence that Richard Swain Offen is his biological father, although it is likely.

On the 5th January 1789, Mary Sandwell married Richard Swain Offen at St. John the Baptist, Margate, Kent, England. Witnessed by Edward Magor {sic} and James Dixon {parish Clerk}^[2]

Mary Offen, of Ramsgate, aged 63 years {b. 1771} died in 1834 and was buried 29th January 1834 at St. George, Ramsgate, Kent, England^[3]

Research Notes

As Mary was born and died prior to civil registration and census, there is no known documentation recording her place of birth or death. Place of birth has been assumed from baptism, and place of death as been assumed from her residence at time of burial.

As Mary married in Margate, it is reasonable to assume that she was baptised in Margate. There was a Mary Sandwell born 22nd December 1771 and baptised 26th January 1772 at St. John the Baptist, Margate, Kent, England, daughter of Nicholas & Sarah Sandwell^[12] however this Mary Sandwell was buried 12th February 1772 aged 7 weeks, daughter of Nicholas & Sarah SANDWELL at St. John the Baptist, Margate, Kent, England^[13]

The only other likely baptism is the Mary daughter of Thomas & Susanna Sandwell, baptised 8th December 1771 at St. Peter in Thanet, Kent, England^[1]
