Possible Origins in England

Henry Sawtell, along with many other signers of the Flushing Charter of 1645, was likely an Englishman. His use of the surnames Sawtell and the alias Doleman likely obligatorily connects him to a Sawtell / Doleman family of Aller, in Somerset, England.

In the Parish of Aller, Somerset, there are two baptisms for a Henry Sawtell:

1609: Henry Dolman alias Sawtle the sonne of John Dolman als Sawtle was baptized the eight daye of Februrary' ^[1]

1610: Henry Sawtle the sonne of William Sawtle was bapt. the 5th day of August ^[2]

Of interest is the baptism of Henry Dolman alias Sawtell, son of John, because it is proposed by some that John Sawtell / Dolman's two other sons Thomas and Richard were actually the brothers Thomas and Richard of Massachusetts. Under this assumption, it is possible that the three siblings Henry, Richard, and Thomas all emmigrated to the New World.

Sarah Sawtell, daughter of Henry Sawtell (possibly by a earlier marriage than that to Sarah (?) widow of Elias Bayly) married Jonathan Wright. Henry Sawtell named in Nicoll Patent of 1666 and also Dongan Patent in 1686. (Riker’s Newtown, page 110.)

April 23, 1669, a highway laid out this side of Hempstead Swamp and position given to Henry Sawtell. (Riker’s Newtown, page 79.)

Dec- 20, 1692 Henry Sawtell to grandson George Wood, his home, etc. for his “maintenance, meate, drink, appearal, washing, lodging and attendance during my natural life." Wit. Samuel Fish and Edward Stevenson. (Town Records) Newtown, Vol. 1.)

Henry Sawtell, or Saitly, by his wife Sarah Sawtell had at least one child: Sarah Sawtell, who m. Jonathan Wright(See Wright Family.) "

Henry Saitley of Newtown New York was the father of Sarah Sawtell married to Jonathan Wright of Flushing, Long Island, and a grandfather to their 15 children. ^[8][9]

Henry Sawtell of Newtown was also referred to with the surname "alias Doleman" in a deed dated March 3, 1680 in Newtown:

"...it more or less & is bounded o. the west by the Lott of Henry Saltwell Als Doleman And on the North and South by the Common Land..."^[10]

Henry Sawtell died in 1703/4 in Newtown, Long Island: "Henry Satel of Newtown dyed the 13 d of ye 11 mo. 1703/4"^[11]
