Nicholas Said has African ancestry.

Nicholas Said (Born Mohammed) was a traveler, translator, soldier, and author.[1]

Nicholas was born about 1836, the 13th of 19 children of Barca Gana and his wife Dalia. [2] Nicholas grew up in the Central Sudan region of Africa and was enslaved around the age of 15. [3] He had been on a hunting trip when he and his friends were ambushed by a band of Kindills. He was bought and sold several times and traveled to Mecca, Medina, Istanbul, Odessa, St. Petersburg, and Moscow. It was here that he was set free and entered the employ of Prince Nicholas Vassilievitch Troubetzkoy. [4] They traveled extensively across Europe. In 1855, he was baptized into the Christian tradition and given the name "Nicholas." [5] During this time, he had learned a number of languages, including Russian, French, and English. He had also traveled to Austria, Germany, Italy, France, and England. [6] In 1860, he emigrated to the United States and became a teacher in Detroit, Michigan. [7] In 1863, he enlisted in the United States Army. [8]

He passed away in 1882.
