Biography

Mary Ann Rutherford was Christened on December 22, 1793, in Sunderland, Durham, England, to parents Thomas Rutherford and his wife Mary. ^[1]

"Richard Southern was born in 1791. He and Mary Rutherford, his first wife, were natives of New Castle, Durham County, England, and came to the United states about 1820. They landed in Baltimore with two-year old daughter Mary and one-year old daughter Eleanor. They rented a farm in Baltimore County, where they lived for two years. Richard was a horticulturist and landscape architect, and he wanted a place near the Capital City...[John Mason] leased the mansion and the land to Richard Southern who took his family there to live about 1822. The soil was rich for gardening and, along with the usual vegetable crops, he experimented in the propagation of tomatoes...Unfortunately, little is known about Richard Southern's first wife, Mary (Rutherford) Southern. It seems to be an indisputed fact that she died on Mason's Island about 1826 and buried on the nearby Virginia mainland... " ^[2]

Officiating was John Barnet, in the presence of Mary Southern, and Robert Rutherford. ^[5]
• 1820: Baptisms: Richard Southern and his wife, Isabella (Rutherford) Southern, had their daughters baptized in St. John the Baptist Church, in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England, on February 27, 1820. Following that event, they migrated to America and arrived in Baltimore, Maryland.
• 1820 Death of Isabella Southern, June 9, 1820, born 1799. There is a Find A Grave memorial for Isabella Southern, buried in St. James Churchyard, Whaley Bridge, High Peak Borough, Derbyshire, England. There is no other information on this memorial to defintively link her as wife of Richard, mother of Mary and Eleanor. FAG #253537910

There is a source for Richard Southern marrying Isabella Rutherford. There is a source for Mary Ann Rutherford's Christening. Was Isabella and Mary Ann the same person? OR did Richard marry Isabella's sister, Mary/Mary Ann after Isabella's death, but before migrating to America? The records from England were sent to me by a very generous genealogist there, but I cannot access further records in England to research Isabella and Mary.
