Edward Rushworth is Notable.

Edward Rushworth born 17 October 1755, was the first son of Capt. John Rushworth, R.N., of Portsea, Hants (by Sarah née Mayne).

He was educated at Winchester College (1768-70) and at Trinity College, Oxford (1780). He became a deacon at Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight.

Edward was married on 27 August 1780 to Hon. Catherine Holmes, the daughter of Rev. Leonard (Troughear) Holmes (afterwards Baron Holmes). They went on to have 8 sons and 5 daughters.

Offices Held:

Captain Freshwater Volunteers (1798-9)
MP for the two boroughs on the Isle of Wight for several periods between 1780 and 1797
MP for Yarmouth (1781)
MP for Newport (1784 to 1790)
MP for Yarmouth (1790)
MP for Yarmouth (1796 to 1797)
Mayor of Yarmouth (1817)

As a deacon at Newport, Rushworth married the patron’s daughter and sat for Yarmouth and Newport on his interest, surviving a petition against his return as being in holy orders (1784). He followed his patron’s political line. Although he was returned for Yarmouth in 1790 and in 1796 for both boroughs, in each case he vacated soon afterwards to accommodate his father-in-law’s guests. There is no evidence of any parliamentary activity, except that on 6 December 1796 he took a month’s leave for private business.

He died on 15 October 1817 ‘much esteemed for the independence of his character and for his intellectual endowments. He was a gentleman of pure and virtuous principles, steadily and zealously attached to the establishment in Church and State, and eminently distinguished for a sense of duty in every relation of life.’

Edward was buried at St James Churchyard, Yarmouth, Isle of Wight Unitary Authority, Isle of Wight, England[1].
