Biography

Sarah Wilkinson, wife of Jonathan Wilkinson, died before 4 February 1688/9, when a Charles City County Court assigned "Jno. Smith, Jno. Baxter and Xpher Hudson to inventory the estate of Sarah Wilkinson, dec'd; and Capt. Dan. Lewellin to swear them."^[1] The previous mention of her in the records (for the court held 3 December 1688) was to defer a suit she brought against the widow May.^[2]

"Ruth, orphan of Jno. Wilkinson, dec'd, by Wm and Mary Randolph, her guardians, vs Wm Fetherstone, who married relict of Henry May, dec'd, is referred to next court." (Charles City County Court, 3 October 1689)^[3]

"Ruth, orphan of Jno. Wilkinson and Sarah his wife, dec'd, by Capt. Wm Randolph, her guardian, bring action agst Wm Fetherston who marryed Mary, relict of Henry May, dec'd, now administrator..." (Charles City County Court, 3 April 1690)^[4]

Jno. Wilkinson, 14 years old - orphan of Jno. & Sarah Wilkinson - chose Capt. Wm Randolph as his guardian. (Charles City County Court, 5 January 1690/91)^[5]

This Sarah Royall was born in Charles City County, Virginia. Both of her parents immigrated to Virginia well before her birth. She was born in Virginia, married in Virginia, lived in Virginia and died in Virginia.

According to the 'Charles City co. Order Bk. 1687-95, p. 170. and p.190' She survived her husband and was living 3 Dec 1688 but died before 4 Feb.1689 (old calendar 4 Feb 1688 which is what causes the confusion over her death date) when the inventory of her estate was ordered to be made.

Guardianship of her under aged children Ruth and John went to William and Mary Randolph, and William Randolph (respectively)^[7]

William and Mary Featherstone: William Featherstone's profile is clearly intended to represent the William who was sued (as husband of Mary, relict of Henry May). The profile for Mary has no reliable sources.

Sarah was the daughter of Joseph Royall and his third wife, Katherine (Banks?). After the death of Joseph in 1658, Katherine married Henry Isham. She made a will 10 Oct 1686 in Henrico County, Virginia, in which she names the children of her first marriage to John Royall, including Sarah Wilkinson.
