Biography

When I was born on March 24, 1961, in Gallipolis, Ohio, my father, Wilbur, was 20 and my mother, Charlotte, was 19. My early years were spent playing with dairy cows, baseballs, and my brother and sister.

We moved to Ironton, Ohio in 1966 where dad took a job as a carpenter for several developers. He eventually started his own business building new homes, this is where I got my first job.

I first met my future bride, Denise, in the fall of 1977, and asked her to "go steady" on November 16, 1977 (at 4:32pm by the way).

I attended the University of Cincinnati in the fall of 1979 returning home in December to help with my fathers business. Homes sales plunged in 1979-80 and dad and I had to find other work. I became a professional photographer for 2 years, then entered retail sales management soon after, transferring from Barboursville, WVa. to St. Clairsville, Oh. then finally to Columbus, Oh.

I married Denise Ann Adams on June 6, 1981, in Ironton, Ohio. Our three children are; Heather b1983, Benjamin b1984, and Ashley b1985.

BigY700 testing through Family Tree DNA and YSEQ has confirmed my terminal haplogroup is R-FTA40115, downstream from R-BY20594.

Hi Michael

This is the time for the annual 2024 check in with members of the Military and War Project. Have you been active during the last six months in the Military and War Project? Do you want to remain working with this project? Note that it is a requirement to respond to the Military and War Project Check-ins. Please respond to this message by clicking the reply button below this message, to post your answer. I look forward to hearing from you..

Many thanks,

Hello Mary,

While I have not been active recently (I'm focused on Irish DNA currently) I would like to remain in the project

Michael, I found this one for you. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Leibbrand-20

It may be an Irish person or someone. Therefore I can mark you as sl Active.

My advice to you for next year, if you want to work with Military and War, is to put some time into this project, rather than limiting yourself to IRISH DNA>

Hi Michael,

It is once again time for our annual Ireland Project check-in. Please respond within the next three weeks to let us know:

  1. If you would like to continue as an Ireland Project member. If your answer is yes, please tell us if you are happy with your current team, or if you would prefer to join a different one. If you are currently participating in more than one team we would appreciate you ranking them in their order of importance to you, from highest priority to lowest. This information will be helpful as we consider possible future changes to our team structure.
  2. In the past, the project has had a very minimal membership requirement (one contribution per year) for badged members to meet. Do you believe this is adequate, or should this requirement be increased? What do you believe would be a reasonable commitment to expect from all project members?
  3. How active have you been in the Ireland Project over the past year? Please choose one of the following options: a) I normally spend 1-5 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. b) I normally spend 6-10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. c) I spend over 10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. d) I am not able to contribute every month but have spent approximately ________ hours during the past year improving Irish profiles.
  4. Please provide feedback on any things you’d like to see the project do more of in the future.

You can respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within the next three weeks we’ll assume your interests have changed or you no longer are able to participate in the Ireland Project at this time, and your badge will be removed. If your circumstances change later you will be welcome to reapply for membership.

Many thanks for all that so many of you have contributed to the project in the past year, and very special thanks to those who answered the project’s call and gave generously of their time to be part of Team Seanchaithe during the most recent connect-a-thon. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Jen,

I am very happy with my current team in DNA. I hesitate to comment on the number of contributions, I haven't made a major contribution since November. I've been seriously pouring over new DNA evidence which may uncover a serious error in the ancient genealogies. We have been in contact with Bart Jaski seeking his wisdom concerning the Sil Muiredach, he is as stumped as we are.

I will be sure to start updating info as soon it is sorted out.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for checking in. The project requires every member to work on at least one of the project's teams however we do not currently have a 'DNA team.' You are currently signed up as a member of the Diaspora team, is that the team you wish to continue working with?

Jen,

I've worked with Richard on his developing DNA team Ireland DNA Team This is the tracking page I set up...and soon will be largely corrected based on recent results and the forthcoming results for Francis McDermot, The MCDermot, Prince of Coolavin and his uncle Hugh McDermot Bart Jaski chart #66 - Ireland DNA Team profiles

Once finished, their results will (hopefully) help genetically identify the diaspora in America, Australia, Germany, Scotland, England, and more.

I would also add that Azure kindly featured my Magh Luirg research "#OnePlace Wednesday showcase: Mhagh Loirg, Ros Comáin Jul 26, 2023." Magh Loirg, Ros Comáin One Place Study

So, I guess my answer would have to be work with the DNA primarily, I will start updating diaspora info soon.

It's time for the One Place Studies Project Check-In!

We've put together a survey for you to fill out to check in with you, it will only take a moment as there are only a few questions. Filling out the survey lets us know you are still interested in coordinating your study and provides an opportunity for you to share any suggestions you may have for the project.

If you have decided to step away from your study, please reply to this comment to that effect.

Hi Michael

As you have no doubt noticed, WikiTree has restrictions on who can create and edit profiles for those people born before 1500 (Pre-1500 profiles). These restrictions have been agreed to by the WikiTree community after much discussion over the years.

Please don't then create such profiles by using false dates such as about 1500 when it is clear the dates of birth and death are well before that.

There are other ways of undertaking pre-1500 work without the badge - see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Pre-1500_Work_without_a_Badge

Hello John,

I am aware of the WikiTree restrictions, I misunderstood the 'Work without a badge' part 6. "Once you have done some work you want someone else to look at, and don't yet have a partner, re-advertise on G2G for a partner, updating the message with the work you've already done!." I communicated directly with Project Leaders: Richard Devlin and Jen Hutton of the Ireland Project https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Ireland May 9: BuckeyeMike Rowley &lt [email address removed] gt;Mon, May 9, 6:07 PM (11 days ago) to Rich, Jennifer Hi Rich and Jen, I've been setting up a free space page to keep track of Mael Ruanaid Mor (d 967) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Descent_of_Mael_Ruanaid_Mor I'm not sure I'm creating new temporary free space profiles in a manner conducive to transferring them into a regular profile. The ones I am creating I label as 'Profile' and look something like this: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Mael_Ruanaid_Mor_Profile Any suggestions to improve my method? Thanks Mike

I then posted on the Ireland Project Google Group May 11:BuckeyeMike Rowley May 11, 2022, 4:27:58 PM (9 days ago) to WikiTree's Ireland Project I have assembled a template (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Bart_Jaski_Chart_Template) and a worksheet (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Ireland_DNA_Team_profiles) to track the charts I am working on. I would like some input; ie. logical? useable to transfer to normal profiles?I would also like input on a unified nomenclature for what surnames we should give profiles to avoid using clan names (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ui_Briun_Seola-11 for Senach mac Daui Tenga Uma), mixed (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Macaodha-1, or should we use mac Aodha), different spellings between father and son (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Macuatach-1 uses Rogallach, his son Cellach uses Rogallaig. I haven't been able to find this info in G2G, I'm probably overlooking it. In my opinion, finding a consistent source of the simplest, anglicized sernames will improve searchability, the Gaelic nomenclature added under "Other Nicknames:" Thanks team! Mike

I was sure I posted on G2G as well but I can't find it so I probably didn't. While waiting for input, I obviously misunderstood part 7. "Once you are working with a pre-1500 partner, seek his or her advice and input on your progress. Let them know when you think the profile is ready to upload to a real profile. Make suggested corrections. All of us are constantly learning on WikiTree! When your partner agrees it is ready, your partner can upload it. It is up to the pre-1500 certified partner." I started helping Rich with https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Ireland_DNA_Team. My thought process was to create these with a disclaimer at the top, then dates to be used in the profiles below that. Once a pre-1500's approved person was ready to edit the profile, all they had to do was correct the dates and delete the "NOTE" comment. My FreeSpace https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Ireland_DNA_Team_profiles served as my worksheet, hoping I would soon be able to become pre-1500 certified and correct the profiles quickly. This seemed to be the simplest, quickest method to place these profiles in the correct place knowing the pre-1500's team is short staffed.  I still haven't heard from anyone else, so I do apologize for the mix-up. I will go back and re-read the working without the badge section to try to figure it out, then redo the profiles. Do you have any suggestions? I appreciate your advice, Mike

Hi Michael,

It’s time for our annual Ireland Project check-in! Please respond within the next two weeks to let me know:

  • If you are happy with the team you’re on or if you’d like to make a change. It is now required that all members with an Ireland project badge work on at least one of the project’s team(s), so if you’ve not yet signed up please do so in your reply to this check-in.
  • What you think the project is doing well, and what (if any) changes you would like to see us make? Are there any teams you would like to become more active in?
  • Would you be interested in helping to work on an Ireland Project newsletter?
  • Please give us some feedback on the use of google group and discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way for us to ensure you receive project communications? If you would like to join us on either one, just let us know in your response and we will get you signed up.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within two weeks, we will assume you are no longer interested in participating in the Ireland Project, and your badge will be removed. If you wish to reapply for membership later, we will be happy to have you back. Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Jen Hutton, on behalf of the Ireland Project

I have spent the last two years deeply involved in genetic genealogy and unfortunately neglected checking in with Wikitree. I do plan to resume work here.

My focus in genetics has focused on Connacht from @200 AD on, specifically the Mayo/Galway/Roscommon area. Could you give me a recommendation on which project I may provide the most input. I will also post some of my Y DNA. I have never used the Google or discord groups, an oversight I will definitely correct.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for taking responsibility for more Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.

If you will be working with any profiles needing GEDCOM cleanup, the AGC tool can help with formatting so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up GEDCOM biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!

I just read your wonderful Free Space page on the Enoch clan. It is a wonderful example! Great narrative, and easy reading. It will be a good example for me of how to organize the Revolutionary War pension records for my immigrant ancestor, Frederick Gump. I am not certain how I ended up in the thread, but I enjoyed it!!

Here is a breakdown of the Enoch clan from Garret-Johan-Henry I-Henry II-Enoch-Pheobe Ann b. 1782, who married Joseph Archer, my wifes ancestor. Let me know if this helps. Looks like it might take a VERY long time to update all the profiles.

Hello, Michael,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or special event. Read the goals and tasks of the project and join if it is a good fit.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Hi M.,

Just a thought - if you haven't had a chance to poke around much, consider looking into "Projects" at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Projects or the G2G forum.

The Projects range from looking for a specific last name to various countries or places. Would your family have any connection to Rowley, Massachusetts? If so, you might want to check into one of the groups studying Puritan Migration or New England Settlers.

Enjoy,

Hello M.,

I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is.

Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site.

Happy tree climbing,
