Lucy Jane Ross was born in June 1879[1] in the city of New York, New York, a daughter of Mediator Ross and Susan (Randolph) Ross.[2] The 1900 U.S. Census recorded Susan Ross, age 58, as a widow living on West 38th Street in Manhattan with her unmarried daughter Lucy J. Ross, age 20. Both were described as black. Susan had had four children, of whom just two were living. Susan was a nurse and her mother worked as a laundress. [3]

Lucy Ross married Matthew Henson in New York City on September 5, 1907.[2] Matthew was born in Nanjemoy, Maryland on August 18, 1866, son of Lemuel Henson and Caroline Waters. Although they were married for 48 years, they had no children.

Lucy Henson died in New York City on March 12, 1968, and was initially buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. In 1988, her remains and those of her husband Matthew Henson were disinterred and reinterred in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.[4]
