Biography

Rachel Rosevelt aka Rachel Rosenvelt

Rachel Rosevelt, the youngest daughter of the nine children of Nicolas, had also been improving the family's position in society. Rachel was born in 1699 and, of course, was a native New Yorker. Although her father had never returned to Esopus to live after opening his shop in New York city he had not broken all ties with the up-river village of his fur trapping days. It is not strange, therefore, to find Rachel married in 1720 to Pieter Low, the son of Cornelius Low, who for many years had kept a store at Esopus. Pieter's ancestors had come from Holland in 1659 and the family had since been identified with the village on the Hudson. Young Pieter, however, preferred New York, where he moved in the best Dutch circles. His children, as the saying goes, all married well.[1] Corrected to reflect newer information.
