John was born in 1918, in Tennessee to John Washington Rogers and Mary Turner[1]. His mother, Mary, died in in 1923 from pneumonia.[2] . His father remarried and had several more children with his second wife. After his father died in 1931, John moved to Chicago to live with his mother's brother, Henry Turner. [3] John attended schools in Chicago, graduating from Technical High School and earning a Bachelor of Education degree from Chicago Teachers College. In 1941, John volunteered as a cadet in the Tuskegee Air Pilot Program and received his commission as a 2nd lieutenant in 1942. He was assigned to the 99th Fighter Squadron in Europe where he served from April of 1943 to August of 1944. During that time, he flew m ore than 100 combat missions and was promoted to captain. He returned to Chicago where he was employed as a teacher while attneding Chicago Law School. He received his Doctor of Law degree in 1948.[4]
John practiced law for 29 years before he was apponted as associate judge of the Circuit Court of Cook county in May of 1977. He was assigned to the Juvenile Division. From 1970 to 1976, he served as trustee of the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. He retired from the bench in 1998.
John passed away in 2014 and is buried in Oak Woods Cemetery in Chicago[5]. More biographical details can be found on his Find-A-Grave profile.
