David Reimert passed through Michigan, marrying Mary L (Hendershot) Sarvey around 1867 and having one daughter together, Persis, who was born in Wisconsin in 1867. However, the couple divorced before 1870, and his wife and their daughter returned to her parents' home in Macon Township, Michigan. that year, David lived in Harrison Township, Wisconsin, boarding with Frances Wunderlin and working as a farm laborer.[6]

He continued west to Kansas, marrying Anna S (Niles) Rimert, the daughter of Erastus J. Niles and Abigail Eliza Parks and the former wife of William Harrison Montgomery, marrying in Newton Township, Kansas on January 31, 1877. They had received their marriage license there on the same day.[7] They took up residence together in Newton Township, where David worked as a brick and stone mason, like his father.[8] At the time the federal census was conducted that year, David noted that he had a sore throat.

David began receiving his Civil War pension on May 2, 1889.[9] Widowed in 1892 after his wife's death at the age of 41, by 1900, David Rimert had returned to Pennsylvania, boarding in Centralia, Pennsylvania with Morton E. and Margaret Lamb and working as a stone mason.[10] He later returned to Kansas, where his Civil War pension was transferred in 1906;[11] it was reauthorized in 1909,[12] when David was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Leavenworth County, Kansas, suffering from rheumatism and heart disease.[4] He was 70 years old at the time of his admission and was described as 5'7" tall with grey hair and blue eyes, a widower, and he stated that his nearest relative was his daughter, Persis Hatch, who lived in Clinton, Michigan.[9] His pension, originally set at $15 dollars per month, was increased twice, to $19 dollars and later to $22.50.
