Biography

Alexandre Richard was born in about 1668 in Port-Royal. He was the son of Michel Richard and Madeleine Blanchard.

He was just 3 years old on the first census in 1671[1]

Again in the 1678 census.[2], confirming the 1668/9 birth year.

In 1686, at Port Royal, Alexandre, aged 17, lived with his father, Michel Richard, aged 56, and his stepmother, Jeanne Babin, aged 18. Four siblings from his father's first marriage to Magdeleine [sic] Blanchard also lived with him: Martin, aged 19, Marie [recte Marie Josephe], aged 12, Cecille [sic], aged 10 and Marguerite, aged 7. The 5 other siblings (Rene, Pierre, Catherine, Anne and Magdeleine [recte Madeleine Elizabeth]) from his father's first marriage who are married and unnamed in the census are recorded elsewhere in the 1686 census with their spouses. The youngest in the family was his half-brother Michel age 2 (the son of his father and Jeanne Babin). The family owned 2 guns, 12 arpents of cultivable land with 16 cattle, 30 sheep and 8 hogs.[3]

Alexandre (21) married Isabelle Petitpas (19) (born about 1670 in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France; daughter of Claude Petitpas and Catherine Bugaret) in 1690 in Port Royal, Acadie. She had been married before, widow of Olivier Boudrot.[4]Their children were:

  1. Marie Josèphe Richard (abt. 1691–aft. 1734) .
  2. Marguerite Richard (abt. 1692–bef. 1763) .
  3. Jeanne Richard (abt. 1694–bef. 1760) .
  4. Pierre Richard (abt. 1696–1778) .
  5. Angelique Richard (abt. 1698–1758) .
  6. Jean Baptiste Richard (abt. 1699–1751) .
  7. Germain Richard (abt. 1703–abt. 1764) .
  8. Michel Richard (1706–1721) .
  9. Anne Marie Richard (1709–abt. 1757)

In 1693, at Port Royal, Alexandre Richard, aged 25, lived with his wife, Isabel [sic] Petitpas, and his stepson, Jean Baptiste, aged 6, son from his wife's first marriage to Olivier Boudrot, and their daughter, Marie Josephe, aged 2. The family owned 1 gun and lived on 18 arpents of cultivable land with 8 cattle, 10 sheep, and 8 pigs. [5]

In 1695, he signed the Loyalty Oath, indicating that he could write.[6]

His final accounting was in 1707 at Port Royal, with quite a young family and a sizeable farm.[7]

He died on October 4, 1709, in Port-Royal.[8] Alexandre was buried in Garrison Graveyard in Annapolis Royal, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, Canada.

If Alexandre Richard b. abt 1668 in Port Royal how is it possible that his grandson, Michel Richard b. 1719 is born in France.

Are there two families with the name Richard in Canada?

posted by G (Rochette) Keefe
Richard-4108 and Richard-70 do not represent the same person because: The marriage of Alexandre Richard to Marie Levron occurred in 1711 --- two years after the death of the Alexandre Richard married to Elisabeth Petitpas.

Richard-4108 and Richard-70 appear to represent the same person because: I believe that these two entries relate to the father of Pierre Richard who married Marie Josephe Boudreau.

Sorry for the duplication

Nice work. I never had noticed that first Jean Baptiste. The date change is what got me thinking they were a duplicate! Kudos for the great eye!!

Actually, it appears that there were two Jean Baptistes. The problem is that in February someone changed the birth date of the older one to match the younger one. If you look at the 1693 census (on this profile) you'll see that Alexandre had a son named Jean Baptiste who was born around 1687. He does not appear in the 1698 census, so he probably died young. The family then had a son around 1699 and named him Jean Baptiste.

There shouldn't be two Jean Baptistes in this family. one bn 1700 one born 1699. Either date is probably fine. Stephen White says 1699... Should merge Richard-581 and Ricahrd-645.
