Simon Reitz was born on 20 January 1841 in Messel. [1] He was the son of Johann Lorenz Reitz and Anna Margaretha Laumann. [1]

He immigrated to the United States about 1853. [2]

He appeared in the 1860 US Census in Green Garden, Will County, Illinois. [3] He was living with his parents and his siblings John, Philip, Lawrence, and Conrad. [3] He was a laborer. [3]

He married Margaret Steffen on 2 June 1870 in Will County, Illinois. [4] They had five [5] children:

  3. Elizabeth [6]
  4. Henry [6]
  5. George [7]

He appeared in the 1870 US Census in Wilton Township, Will County, Illinois. [8] He was living with his parents, his wife Margaret, and his siblings Philip and Conrad. [8] He was working on his father's farm. [8]

He appeared in the 1880 US Census in Wilton, Will County, Illinois. [6] He was living with his wife Margaret and their children Philip, Helen, Elizabeth, and Henry. [6] He was a farmer. [6]

He appeared in the 1900 US Census in Wilton Township, Will County, Illinois. [5] He was living with his wife Margaret and their son Henry. [5] He worked at a limestone quarry. [5]

He appeared in the 1910 US Census in Joliet Township, Will County, Illinois. [2] He was living with his wife Margaret. [2] He was a watchman for a railroad. [2]

He died on 5 December 1910. [7] He was buried at Elmhurst Cemetery in Joliet, Will County, Illinois. [9]

His obituary in the 6 December 1910 edition of the Herald News reads [7]:

SIMON REITZ DIES OF PNEUMONIA

Was Resident of Wilton Township for Nearly 50 Years.

Simon Reitz, an old WIll county resident, died at his home, 1514 East Clinton street at 11:45 p. m., Monday, at the age of 70 years. He was taken with pneumonia and later a complication of diseases developed.

Mr. Reitz was an early settler in this country, having come here from Hessen, Dornstedt, Germany with his parents, four brothers and two sisters, 52 years ago and settled in Wilton township. He leaves to mourn his loss, a widow, two sons, Phiip of Joliet, Henry of Blue Island; two daughters, Mrs. William Ginter of Joliet and Mrs. G. V. Mueller of Blue Island. George, a younger son, died 17 years ago. He also leaves two brothers, Conrad of Joliet and Philip of Wilton and three grandchildren.

He was a member of Wilton Lodge No. 640 I. O. O. F. for 35 years and a highly respected and esteemed citizen who held many positions of trust and honor in Wilton township. He moved to Joliet seven years ago where he has since resided.

Funeral from the house at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon to the German Lutheran church, Rev. Richard Schiele officiating. Burial in Elmhurst cemetery.
