One of many children of Johann Daniel Reiss and Anna Christina Weissman, Jacob Reiss was born in Erfenbach, Germany in 1796.
At age 20, he married a woman named Dorothea Reiss. She was the daughter of a Heinrich Reiss and Catharina Thomannin, though what, if any, relation her family had to Jacob's is unknown. They had four children together and she died in 1827.
Six months after the death of his first wife, Jacob remarried to Maria Elisabetha Scheer. They had three children while still in Germany.
In 1833 the Reiss family immigrated to America. They settled in Ohio and continued their family, adding seven more children to the mix.
Jacob passed away in late 1846, shortly after the birth of his 14th and final child.[1]

Notes
At various points through his life, Jacob alternated between using the name Jacob and the name Daniel, with no obvious reason for the changes. This is verified by the record of his second marriage.
