Named after a sister who died young, Philippina "Phoebe" Reiss was born in Ohio in 1834. She was the fourth child of Jacob and Maria Elisabetha (Scheer) Reiss and first to be born in America.
When she was 20 years old, she married Adam Bauer, another German immigrant who'd come to live there. He was a railroad foreman.
They started their family in Ohio, having seven children together. In 1885, the family moved to Nebraska. Phoebe passed away five years later, three days after she turned 57.
Adam remained a widower for the rest of his life. In the early 1900s, Adam Bauer returned to Ohio to live with their son Philip. He succumbed to sickness and old age in 1913. He was 87 years old. Adam's remains were taken back to Nebraska and buried with his wife.

Some time ago, I found a birth record from Germany for Philippina Reiss with these same parents. I believed this to be the same woman who married Adam Bauer...turns out I was wrong. That Philippina died at one year old, while still in Germany. Upon reassessing the information I have for Philippina Reiss Bauer, although a birth record doesn't appear to exist for her, sources seem to agree that she was born in Ohio in 1834 (October 16th, according to her tombstone). It would appear that this Philippina was named after her deceased sister.
